Let my neighbor borrow my tractor...

Came home from the store and I seen my neighbor, who just got back from spending the summer in Alaska, trying to cut down his acre field with a hand string trimmer. I walked over and chatted with him for a bit and he said he tried to rent a tractor to mow the field but no one in town has one to rent. Told him he could use mine... :shocked:


So I taught him how to run it and he went off mowing with the 5' brush hog. an hour later he returned with the tractor in perfect condition and 100 bucks in his had. :thumbsup: Not all neighbor loaning are horror stories :dance1:

My neighbor and his son both have a key to mine. They have helped me a bunch never asked for a dime. He is a supervisor for the water department. His son works at Komutsu in the shop. Simple rules if it breaks fix it. Dont use up all the fuel and not rplace it.

Fortunately - all my neighbors, that need tractors, have their own. Those who do not - I would hesitate to loan them my heavy duty pry bar.

I learned a long time ago it's best if someone wants to borrow my equipment, they get to borrow me at the same time. You have a good neighbor, don't ever let him move.

Well years ago i let my Brotherinlaw borrow my tractor scoup and box blade i told him if you break it fix it before return the next day he backed his truck by the tractor shed and started pulling pieces of the scoup out said he hit a stump, i told him i would help him load it back up for him to get if fixed before returning it, i now have a piece of patched together crap and i made my B I L mad he later came over to borrow my tractor and bush hog i offered to bring the tractor to his place and bush hog for him free, made him mad he decided hedidnt want it cut. I do a lot of tractor work for my neighbors free but i dont loan my tractor any more.

Some years ago, I let a neighbor borrow my tractor with the box blade. He came over and asked that day. He had worked on a farm for some years. I started it for him, as it is an old tractor with manual glow plugs(turn key to left to heat them up). He used it and returned it, no problems. Two weeks later, I went to use my tractor. Battery was dead, tried to charge it and had to replace it. After replacing the battery, found the starter was burned up. Had to replace the starter. The next week I saw my neighbor at the store. He asked what was wrong with my tractor as he had come to borrow it again(without asking a second time) and it would turn over but not fire off. I asked if he had heated the glow plugs, He "oh, i forgot". He cost me a battery and starter. I told him "DO NOT BORROW ANYTHING AGAIN, WITHOUT ASKING".

This is exactly what I do too... if you need my stuff, I go with it! But lately I have been so busy trying to get this house ready to sell, I cannot offer anyone my time... Where I live, there is only 2 neighbors I trust enough to even touch my tractor and he was 1 of them.


On the other hand... I let my Brother in-law borrow my dump trailer all the time and pretty much every time it comes back, something needs fixing

My BIL has a harsh but effective approach, he tells them when they ask to borrow equipment if it gets damaged not to bring it back just bring cash, basically if you break it you bought it. He says no one has ever taken him up on the offer.

Based on my experience I'm done loaning anything to anybody unless I am there to insure it is being used properly. Even if the damage was outside anyone's control a friend would feel responsible and you would always wonder if it could have been prevented had they done something differently.

This is also my approach. I'd rather not have someone else have the liability of something breaking while they were using it, especially if it's not their fault. It's just a bad situation. I always go with my equipment, and most people are grateful because I am a better operator of my equipment than they are usually.

The last thing I loaned out was like new and came back looking 50 years old, blade wrecked, handle broken, a Makita chop saw that cost me a pile of money. I'm done loaning stuff out period. I don't borrow anything, If I need it I buy it, if I can't afford to buy it I rent it..

this is me as well. My son in law uses my lawn mower, but he's as particular if not more so about taking care of equipment than I am. He hasn't asked to borrow the tractor though, and I'm not so sure I'd let him, even though, having several years working on a farm, he has tons of hours of seat time

My bIL is a meticulous bugger from watching him over the years and know he treats stuff much easier and better than I do. He is very conscientious with everything and I would not have a problem letting him borrow anything, but he never does. Probably because he knows others would want to borrow his stuff and he always comes with the machine. People get offended when he says he comes with the machine because they think he doesn't trust them. Maybe because he doesn't.

Sounds like you have a great neighbor, jdom84.

All of our neighbors who need a tractor have a tractor (or, in the case of the guy to our south, a skid steer). The one neighbor across the road from us who doesn't have one lives on property that's all steep hills and woods, and probably couldn't use a tractor there anyway. Most of our family and friends live 40 miles away in our hometown.

No one borrows our tractor.

I posted early that my neighbor and his son have keys ti mine. Yesterday my fuel shutoff went out. So I dropped some trees. Called my neigbor ask if his 8n was running it not radiator went out. He said he noticed I dropped some trees. Ask me what I was doing told him had three small tree that I need to move and was doing with a come along. He reply if I had told him he would have left the key to his F250 4wd and I could have used it.
