Sig said something about it and I kind of ran with it, sorry for the derail..

The fact is you ran with it, so you must see some kind of an analogy in your comparisons...

When I see stats and how the news prints news stories, I do see a lot of common ground between dog attacks and gun shootings. If you read one of the links I provided, I can't be the only one scratching my head over the comment "And the ASPCA issued a statement that the media has repeatedly told them that they have no interest in reporting attacks involving non-pit-bull-type dogs."

Reality - a lab or some heinz 57 dog kills a kid, eh, a dog kills which can happen all the time, and in general, no interest. BUT, if a pit bull kills, it will get people more interested in reading about it.

Perhaps another story the news calls the dog a pit bull, but when you actually see the dog, it's more of a lab looking dog, but because it's shorter than a normal lab, it's got to be a pit mix, but at that point, they'll just call it a pit bull (who really cares what the actual breed is?)

Reality - A black kid shoots another black kid with a 38 snubby (or a couple of other black kids), it makes local headlines in the obits and perhaps a paragraph in the police section and maybe a side bar on the internet. Kids are killing kids every day with small guns, no one really cares. However, a guy takes a AR-15 out and shoots someone (or a couple of other people) and it WILL make the headlines because it's a BLACK EVIL LOOKING RIFLE.

Another story the paper claims that the shooter used a AR15 type rifle, but when you see a picture of the actual gun, turns out the gun was a black ruger .22LR and wasn't even a centerfire rifle (although most likely half the population in the US couldn't tell you the difference between a centerfire or a rimfire). But who really cares what kind of gun it was? It was still a gun that killed, what difference does it matter?

Go figure huh?

The reality is ANY dog that has size and strength and hurt people, particularly given the envrionment the dogs are raised in.

You don't really need a license to have dogs OR kids, but you do need some kind of license to own a firearm. Why? Keep in mind, I could be arguing the fact that you shouldn't need a license to own a firearm:D

You're a smart guy, we both know pit bulls cause more deaths and mauling by a wide margin.. There is no sense in debating that fact with people that own them.. If German Shepherds had the same reputation I wouldn't own one of those either..

I agree with you 100%, for ANY dog.

For kids, we actually had our state license for them as well:laughing: Do think it would be hard to make in mandatory for everyone to be licensed for children though. All you need is to put a ***** and a ****** together, and there you go, kids. No brians, no nothing needed. Just pump em out. Not certain how the state is going to regulate screwing. Could be a Woody Allen flick where you need a license to have sex.

Our 30 year old son and his fiancee just adopted a shelter dog. Three interviews, a letter explaining why they wanted the dog, and a home visit by the shelter before they were approved; then a one week trial period with another visit to their home... Baby could have been done in one night... And no one cares about that. ??? Just say'n.

German Shpherds had the same reputation before pit bulls became popular. BUT people still owned them (German Shepards). Just as people owned Dobermans and Rotties when THEY were the "dangerous breed" to own.

Just because you don't want to own a particular breed of dog, does that mean someone else shouldn't have the right to own it? Sincere question.

From a county run shelter with little local volunteer support, that is not the norm. I'm curious, what local state run animal shelter did they adopt from?

It would be probably be the norm if it were from a local volunteer human society organization where the pet was in foster care.

This is only from my own personal experience, having worked with both local organizations here in NC. That said, I understand that state run programs may be different depending on where they're actually being run. Why I ask where...

LOL

NO they didn't, when was the last time you heard of a GSD eating their owner on a walk?????.. And if someone wants to own one I really don't care.

If it's not their owner, does this still qualify? It's from this year and in the United States.

Officer Shoots, Kills German Shepherd After Dog Attack In Oakland << CBS San Francisco

Trying to stay with this year, again, not it's owner, but a baby (no good?)

And like you, I don't care what people want to own, just as long as they are responsible for it.

Thing is, when people start talking about how dangerous something is, generally the next thing is they want to ban it because it's "no good" for society.

Ya I did see that.

I liked this part of the story:

"But pit bull supporters say the dogs' reputation of being inherently dangerous or aggressive is a myth."

LOL... what a bunch of nonsense..

Do you honestly want compare pit bull attacks to GSD statistics??

I sincerely believe it would be unfair at this point.

Honestly, the one Terrier I owned (until she died of an enlarged heart) NEVER showed any signs of aggression other than barking (while retreating if she didn't know you). That said, as a civilian, every gun I've own has never killed one person yet.

Defies the odds I know, go figure.

My point is BEFORE pits became the popular breed, we had the same types of conversations about GS's, Dobbies and Rotties.

My neighbor had a dobie in the early 80's. People we're scared to death of him, he was nothing but a big wussie.
