Sounds like it should work out fine.

Is there an advantage to putting up sheetrock before the wood on the ceiling? I'm curious on why to spend the time and money to install the sheetrock first.

A few things;

More insulating value, less outside noise, waste less T&G wood, holds all the insulation where it belongs. (blown in the attic)

At least these are some of the things the builder and finish guys have told me.

I was wondering the same thing. Interesting thoughts on it.

Do you recall what thickness they used on the ceiling?

I was a finish carpenter / contractor for years. Did many t&g ceilings. Some builders put up rock first, others did not. I could never get a good answer as to why for either method. I know it was easier to install the wood directly to the joists or rafters for the install. I knew exactly where to nail. We had a few warranty calls for loose and or warping boards on the ones that had Sheetrock behind them. Not one call-back or warranty issue on the ones secured directly to the structure.

I could never figure out if it was due to the different expansion / contraction properties or differences in moisture content.

Job looks great, beautiful doors. I'm following your build intently. Your progress is impressive. We are in process of building a small cottage / retirement home. We're going to use the same style of door, with black iron hardware.

I was thinking the carpenter could chalk line where the joists are so he could hit his nails through the sheetrock into the wood.

Kyle,
I think the sheetrock was 1/2", just a guess though. The T&G was put up before paint so the installer was able to hit the trusses with no problem. (he was the framer of the house also)

Thanks LS,
Like I said in other post; this is the first home we've had that had finished wood work in it. So far we are very, very happy with how it's looking.

Looking at that ceiling makes me want to add some T&G to part of my family room.

Thanks Buckeye,

We have a "trayed" ceiling in the master bedroom and I'm thinking T&G would look real good in there. Goeduck ask about it a few posts back. I didn't think about it much then, but, the thought has been planted.:) I would do it after we move in.

My FR is partly 8ft ceiling with a room above, other part opens up to a vaulted ceiling. Original plan was a fireplace and stone up the end. So maybe Ill put TG on the vaulted.

Also thinking about my porch ceiling, that willctake a lot.

Question, did they start T&G from top or bottom?
Did they prefinish?
Could you give closeup on how they trimmed bottom and end edges?
Looks like you used flat with V edge.

I was wondering about the finish also? And did they predrill the holes for fastening?
