range selector for hst supposed to be extremely hard to shift?

The drive is hydraulic but the transmission (H,M,L) is still actual metal straight cut gears. So if it is hard to change ranges, just touch the HST pedal while applying a little pressure to the shifter. It will slip right in.

If you put enough pressure to start bending or flexing the shifter, you are going to break something.

Once you get it, it will become second nature.

MovED, not movING. Found that out earlier today when I got that dreaded gear grinding noise while rolling just barely. It needs to be fully stopped, but you may need to move it before stopping again to get the lever locked in.

I’ve never had any gear grind by pressing the pedal a tiny bit while pulling in the range selector. Usually just pressing the brake is enough but sometimes I have to go with the above practice.

I was on a slope. When I let off the brake, I started rolling forward downhill as I moved the lever.

I have a Mahindra 2655 HST which is very similar to your RK, both are built by TYM on the same base tractor. As others have said, you need to kinda feather the HST pedal either forward or reverse depending on slope to get the tension off the gears in the transmission and then the shifter will move really easy. Don't force it or you'll bend or break something or you can damage the shift forks in the transmission. I usually put a slight pressure on the shifter as I feather the pedal and when the tension releases from the gears it pops right out. Just be ready to hit the brake if you're on a slope because it will free-wheel roll when it hits neutral.

My Kubota B2650 can be like that. Just nudge it fwd or rev just a tiny amount and it will go in. If you are forcing it you should really check it closely, something is wrong.

Mine is often tough to switch range. I'll move the tractor a bit and *then* try to shift. Don't shift while moving unless you're barely moving at all.

My 4105 does this too, although I only have H/N/L to select from.

It must be an HST 'quirk'.

My Kioti is the same way. I just do what HillStreet does and that works for me.

I try to take the tractor out of gear and lock the loader controls whenever I'm getting out of it; it just seems safer that way. It's too easy to bump the loader lever or misstep on a pedal, and if someone is standing in front of a tire, the parking brake seems it is only going to succeed in making their death or injury happen more loudly. Maybe as I get more seat time, I'll get complacent and stop doing that. It does mean that I'm getting a lot more practice at getting the transmission in and out of gear. It seems to come out of gear easiest at the moment that you let pressure off of the go pedal. Trying to get it into gear, I often alternate between trying the trans lever and pushing go pedals until it slips or clicks into place
