Skidding winch

great replies, im learning, sounds like the steepness would be a major factor and thickness but with a skidsteer it doesnt take much room at 6ft wide max to get around, i also use steel tracks and they do a pretty good job of a billy goat, sounds like it would be hard to even get a skidder winch in some of those places goodness!!! thanks for sharing oh and 4570 man about that winch on your trailer, mine is portable, i welded a receiver tube on the front of my trailer 25 bucks from TSC, with some old scrap i had laying around, i use jumper cables or a spare battery for power, welded a piece of flat steel i got from the metal by the foot store for 25 bucks to the male receiver i got for 20 bucks at TSC drilled and bolded the winch to it, got a 8000lb winch with a snatch block for 300 bucks heck its like butter for anything i have used it for plus i can move the winch to other things as needed. ive got less than 400 bucks in the whole rig and its portable, i can slide it in the receiver on my SS bucket/forks or on the receiver on my tractor hitch, its a great way to make one useful on several pieces of equip/applications

Right. These are common forests out here. Not much room between trees.

Would definitely be low production work for some guys but it would spee things up for me. Right now Its either dragging trees out with the quad to an area where I can block them up or just simply blocking them up where they lay and hauling them out in the quad trailer.

Are you saying instead of mechanically or physically engaging the idler pulley to create the winching, have tension on the belts all the time and have something to mechanically disengage the winching. If so the problem I could see in that would be if the disengaging mechanism failed there would be no way of stopping the winch in an emergency except to disengage the tractor pto.
Unless I am misunderstanding you

Using a quad. I built this for pulling some small logs, works well. It also folds down and a flat bed is put on to make it a dump trailer. The apex of the arch connects to the upright and is pinned.

To those that can't really see the use of a logging winch, on this terrain it's quit nice to have a winch.

I completely agree, you live in logging winch country.

You're not missing anything. You don't need one. Now if you want one, that's different. But you don't need one.

We all have our own personal calculations regarding time saved vs. $$ spent. Then you have to factor in the "having fun" factor. I don't "need" a tractor either, but it certainly makes my life easier.

Use ropes to get down and up on the worst places, and those on the bottom hooking on must watch out for stones coming down when the log goes up. But it's fun in its own way.

If we looked at everything from a strictly financial viewpoint we all would be living in one room apartments and eating Raman noodles every night. With my first winch I cut enough wood off my property to pay myself back for the land; now I am doing the same to pay myself back for the Uniforest which I bought last year.

Years ago I bought a winch from pierce sales, one of the best things I ever bought right now it's still mounted on my old 4X4 62 chevy but one of my projects is to build a universal mount for tractor and truck. Same winch is still available from pierce arrow inc. originally designed as a wrecker winch. The newer model is their PS654 series available from 9,000 lb pull rating to 12,500 lb also available as 12v, 24v, or hydraulic with either a 8" or 11" drum, the 8 " holds 100ft of 3/8" cable the 11' 125 ft. price is around $650 and up if you shop around. I have skidded 4ft dia black oak logs 10 to 12 ft up a dirt bank with no problem it will skid big enough logs I have had to anchor truck to another tree.

You can get it as either one as I stated it's available as a 9000 lb or 12,500 lb the 9,000 lb is what I have with the 11 inch drum the stall point is on it 11,500 lb. All are available as 12v, 24v or hydraulic.

How are those rated, like most of those winches at 9,000 with the first wrap on the drum?

My skidding winch is rated at 9,000 on the LAST wrap on the drum, I wouldn't want less...
