Polar Vortex Preparations

FWIW, in the 20 years I've been living in Northern Vermont, I've had my tractor gel up twice, in the freezing cold, in the middle of my 1/4 mile + driveway while clearing snow. I can't tell you how much fun I had dealing with that! And that was using fresh off road diesel (first time). First time, I figured it was just a fluke. Second time, I was just being stupid for not taking the first time as a sign. I add anti-gel to my diesel year round just because I don't know if it will be what I'll be using when the weather turns cold. I guess you would call me a belt and suspenders type of guy- but 2 times trying to change out a gelled fuel filter in 10 degree temps with no heat made me see the light. Better to prepare for the worst and not have it happen, than not be prepared and have it happen. Just saying.

Anyone know if off-road diesel is treated? I think I read that it is not.

Around here it is but you should call the gas station you get fuel from and ask them.

It has warmed up to -10 here.

It was about -19 here this morning, wind chill something like -40. No mail today here either. When your used to working the land, tilling the ground, and chopping wood like me, you don't even need a coat today.

I brought my tractor up from the barn and put it in my headed garage/work shop. It was a tight fit, but got everything under cover.

I've been quietly concerned about the standby generator though. It's 0 degrees F out today. (I know, I know, to some of you that is a heat wave!) Today was the weekly exercise run. It started right up! This is the first winter season on it since installation late last August so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Wind chill here is in the -45 or colder range all day. Boiler has been running pretty much full time but it is keeping the heat at 70.

This is once in a life time cold here. So those that are saying we are getting soft... we never faced this before so....

Around here the local government closed and a good number of businesses closed, but there was no state of emergency declared. Local grocery stores are open so if you need french toast you can get it.

There is COLD, and then there is COLD.

Wind chills in the -40 range is life altering.

Not sure about Indiana, Missouri had this as normal until the last ten years. Those last ten years made us soft.

This year we had a pleasant weather break first half of January.

Actually if you dig under the snow now it's muddy.

If it's still doing this in two weeks then we'd have something to complain about.

Forcast says 53 degrees Sunday
