Polar Vortex Preparations

FWIW, in the 20 years I've been living in Northern Vermont, I've had my tractor gel up twice, in the freezing cold, in the middle of my 1/4 mile + driveway while clearing snow. I can't tell you how much fun I had dealing with that! And that was using fresh off road diesel (first time). First time, I figured it was just a fluke. Second time, I was just being stupid for not taking the first time as a sign. I add anti-gel to my diesel year round just because I don't know if it will be what I'll be using when the weather turns cold. I guess you would call me a belt and suspenders type of guy- but 2 times trying to change out a gelled fuel filter in 10 degree temps with no heat made me see the light. Better to prepare for the worst and not have it happen, than not be prepared and have it happen. Just saying.

Anyone know if off-road diesel is treated? I think I read that it is not.

Around here it is but you should call the gas station you get fuel from and ask them.

It has warmed up to -10 here.

It was about -19 here this morning, wind chill something like -40. No mail today here either. When your used to working the land, tilling the ground, and chopping wood like me, you don't even need a coat today.

I brought my tractor up from the barn and put it in my headed garage/work shop. It was a tight fit, but got everything under cover.

I've been quietly concerned about the standby generator though. It's 0 degrees F out today. (I know, I know, to some of you that is a heat wave!) Today was the weekly exercise run. It started right up! This is the first winter season on it since installation late last August so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Wind chill here is in the -45 or colder range all day. Boiler has been running pretty much full time but it is keeping the heat at 70.

This is once in a life time cold here. So those that are saying we are getting soft... we never faced this before so....

Around here the local government closed and a good number of businesses closed, but there was no state of emergency declared. Local grocery stores are open so if you need french toast you can get it.

There is COLD, and then there is COLD.

Wind chills in the -40 range is life altering.

Not sure about Indiana, Missouri had this as normal until the last ten years. Those last ten years made us soft.

This year we had a pleasant weather break first half of January.

Actually if you dig under the snow now it's muddy.

If it's still doing this in two weeks then we'd have something to complain about.

Forcast says 53 degrees Sunday

Local news said a transformer blew this morning and close to 1000 people are without power. They also showed workers trying to restore power

Windchill was -45 when I saw the report

Six degrees and schools are out (mails here) I guess their heating systems won't handle these cold temps.
That or they are worried about the liability of having kids walking in the cold.

My sister got a ticket in Brownsburg for going 45 in a 55 zone. It was snowing and the cop said she was driving too fast for the conditions. Your area shuts down with 3" of snow. We laugh at anything south of U.S. 30.

Yea its stupid. I grew up in Warsaw area out in the country and that was when we actually had winters. I currently work in North Dakota and have for the last 13 years. I still live in Indiana. So find all this to comical. I have even worked in Alaska in Febuarary. Worked in -65 and people here act like we shouldn't do anything.

I can understand 'too fast for conditions' when roads are slippery. Most public drivers don't have a lot of experience in adverse conditions. There are times when traffic stops are reasonable. But there are those other times. I was going to work one morning in a big city many years ago. I hated traffic, so I'd go in early, before rush hours. Five lane interstate freeway, 65MPH speed limit, clear dry pavement, warm weather, full daylight, not a single other car on the road. I was the only one in sight. Until I caught the lights in my mirror. They said I was doing 80. Could have been, don't really know. At the time in that area, they would sit stationary on ramps and clock passing traffic. Knowing that, I always wondered how fast they would have to be traveling from a standing stop to overtake a car running 80. I guesstimated at least 120. Which of us was creating a greater hazard?

Little Donny wannabee. He's done more to harm the people of KY than anyone knows.

Just curious how ya know these things unless ya live here. Admittedly hes not well recieved by the vote buying public pension bunch. But he is the first Gov. to have the guts to say the state pension is broke and needs fixing.
As for the soft comment. We went to school regardless of temp years ago.
Way too many participation trophys handed out these days.
But in other more related task I put up some windbreaks for the dog and chickens.

I think my fuel will be ok. We were in the mid 40's today and will be in the mid 60' by the end of the week
30 here right not. It was 21 last night

God forbid parents should be responsible to dress their kids for the weather before sending them to school.

Your "once in a lifetime" only goes back 23 years around here but the local news still wants to make it sound like we should expect at least 50 or more bodies by daybreak.
This is just normal weather in northern Canada or Alaska & people live & work in it just fine.
