It sure is. Never have been able to justify the cost though. If I ever did, I would try and get it cheap, sometimes available. Most of the stuff you plant, dies anyway, as just quick cover, so it's a while before you get a real lawn.
My el cheapo source for sod is to cruise through the new subdivisions where new houses are popping up. When they landscape they sod the whole yard, then afterward they walk around and cut out the areas where they want hedges or islands, etc. The off cuts get piled off to the side to be disposed of, and they don't try to re-use it. Laying it ends up being like a jigsaw puzzle because most pieces are cut up into curves or pieces for the shape they want the hedge to take, and you don't get enough to do a whole yard productively in a weekend. If you aren't in a hurry though, or just want to fix up an area that got beat up during renos, etc, it is free sod. Also where the city has just done road work, when they are finished they will re-sod the medians or the area between the curb and the sidewalk. There is usually a pile of off-cuts waiting around to be loaded into a truck to be shipped away to organics disposal.
