Need to replace our grill. It's nothing fancy - just a stainless 4-burner with a side burner & runs on a 20lb propane tank but is pretty much entirely shot. Was just going to get another basic one, but mrs CMV has some specific things she wants and checking the usual places I'd get one (Lowe's, HD, Target, Academy, etc) I can't find anything remotely similar to what she wants.

She wants it half like a regular grill with grates, half with a griddle top. I of course asked how the griddle top is any different than just using a griddle insert made to sit on regular grill grates? For some reason - which cannot be explained with words - there is a huge difference and new one must have the griddle top built in, left outside forever (where it will somehow magically not rust).

She wants it larger than what we have (which isn't small) but not to run thru a propane tank so fast. I of course explained all 4 burners on high, 15 min preheat, to do 2 burgers + 2 ears of corn might be a bit excessive and why a 20lb propane tank doesn't seem to last very long, but apparently the current grill is just inefficient....so new one needs to sip propane under same conditions ....

It needs to hold 2 propane tanks. Not one installed and enough room in cabinet for the spare to sit ready to go - needs to be able to have 2 installed simultaneously. See above for reason why.....

Although it needs to be much larger AND have a big cast iron plate permanently affixed, it must be lighter and easier to move around. I noted that ours hasn't moved 1 inch from the day I put it on patio years ago, but apparently ours is too heavy to move (maybe 100 lbs, wheels on one side). So must be lighter because apparently the new grill is going places....

Must have a side burner. I pointed out we have NEVER used the side burner, but must be a burner, not a searing plate (which would have actually been used if that's what ours was vs a standard side burner).

It must be made of indestructible stainless steel, probably 10GA min (but keep in mind it has a weight restriction which would require aluminum or plastic construction at most). I of course pointed out that while although current one is stainless, not really a reasonable expectation that it can sit out in full sun and weather, uncovered, year-round, and stay pristine. Stainless is not magic.... But the fridge, dishwasher, microwave, etc in the kitchen are same age and still look brand new. If their stainless can stay looking that good, no reason the grill's can't. Hard to argue with that logic....

Lastly, it must have a thermometer on the hood. A GOOD one. I pointed out our thermometer hasn't worked in years (see note about storage and care above), neither of us knows how hot it *should* be to cook anything, and regardless of what any thermometer says, the only setting she knows is all burners, wide open, full 15 min heat up time. Do not turn off or down any burner until all food comes off.

So with all that, please tell me what grill to buy :)

This is only thing remotely close I ran across. Reviews are really bad, never heard of that brand, & lower frame looks really cheap.

Get what you want and tell her you will do the grilling?

otherwise, good answers above.

i really like my kitchen aid branded grill. lots more features than the same price of other brands. i have had it about 5 years and still looks great.

Sounds to me like you will never have another grill. No way to win here. I mean maybe in the same universe where unicorns that fart rainbows are real.

Although not half and half like she wants I have a 36" Blackstone 4 burner griddle. I use it at home and even take it when I go camping. It is great that I can cook bacon, sausage, eggs, homefries and pancakes all at the same time when camping. I usually camp with two other couples and cooking all at once no one has to wait to eat. They do sell a 2 burner grill / griddle combo. We have gone over a week on one 20lb tank cooking 3 meals a day for 6 people. Just somethimg to consider. The top lifts off and the legs fold for easy travel storage in the pick up bed.

In a case like this I would go get a grill that I know will work and tell her that this is temporary till you can find one that fits all her requirements.

She will most likely protest but you must very tactfully ask for her help in finding what she wants. Might have to go shopping with her a few times to her local/normal places but with each disappointment she will go farther between rounds till you get where I am at.

My temporary grill and patio furniture has been in place for 8 years so far. Every year she drags me to some place that someone told her about to look at new patio furniture that is supposedly better than what we have and she leaves disappointed. I end up having to splurge for a nice dinner along the way but it seems to keep her content till the next spring right before we bring everything out for he warm weather.

Good Luck!

Get a weber with cast alum top and bottom shells, or you'll be replacing it again in another 3-4 years. I finally bit the bullet and spent a little more 3 years ago and very glad I did.

As for the griddle situation, I'd cook on an insert if it were me. But I don't sleep with your wife, you do!
