Kind of, sort of related, but it's why I put a coolant presence sensor on a generator I am building.

You'd think that would be a standard sensor on every engine out there! If coolant is lost all at once and there is no coolant left for the temp sensor to take a reading off of, you have no way of knowing that there is a problem till its way too late.

I guess it just isn't a really big issue. I guess it all depends on where the temperature sender is. I guess, much of the time you could smell the coolant, I know I can. On an unattended generator, it's a little different, but even there, the industry doesn't use presence sensors.

People may be over reacting a bit. The fact that it was cold is a bonus. It's not like you ran the thing without oil, and BTW the oil does provide a lot of cooling as well.

My guess, is that things are just fine.

It got hot enough to lose power,,,,,why would it lose power?... Partial seize...Gaurantee it is no longer as new, and that is what he paid for.

I called a random kioti dealer and asked him to look up the compression spec in the service manual. The spec was 469-530 psi if I remember correctly. As new as it is, all cylinders should be within about 20-25 psi of each other. I will have them come do a compression test and if the cylinders are out of spec then they can get me a new tractor. I'd say rebuild it, but if they can't get a block heater right I'm not sure I want to go that route.

Good luck with that.

How computerized is the machine? Maybe something else went amiss and shut it down. If it was old school, just a dumb old pump, I might worry. But like I said, it depends on where the sending unit is. No matter what, it still senses temperature and if it got hot enough from air in the passage getting hot, it would still work. And, I'm thinking, maybe since it is designed to work at water temperatures, it might not take that much to raise the air temperature to put it into alarm.

It would be very interesting to hear from someone that designs such things.

Have you made contact with the selling dealer and voiced your concerns about why the engine lost power and shut down? I think a reputable dealer will make it right. If they don't make you happy call Kioti directly and tell them what happened. At the very least they could have an engineer explain the good and bad for the situation.

Hold on there fellas, it never shut down. Sorry if I gave that impression, but I didn't think I said anything to indicate that it shut down. No, it just lost power. Driving across a flat road it would not drive in 4th gear high range like it had before. I had to downshift to 3rd and even then the rpm's wouldn't get much above 2k.
About 20 minutes ago I went into my dealer's service manager's office and talked with him about getting the compression tested. He agreed to it, and since I negotiated travel expenses for warranty work into the purchase, it will be entirely on their dime. Only thing I don't like is he wants to bring the tractor there to do it. I'd rather be there to see the reading myself, or at least have an independent 3rd party do it. That might void the warranty though?
