Push ring PTO coupling

Hi
I have a PTO with a ring which slides towards the tractor when the PTO shaft is placed on the end of the PTO. How do I get it on the tractor spline to the grove and take it off again at the end of use. The push pin PTO I have is a breeze in comparison. Cheers John N

They are all about the same. Pull the ring back, hold it in place, push the PTO shaft all the way forward onto the tractor/implement PTO stub, release the ring. The ring should slide forward and release the pin to engage the grove on the PTO shaft.

You might have to pull the PTO shaft forward/back a bit to ensure engagement.

I currently have the push pin type PTO shaft. I previously had the slip ring variety.

Lots of lube and patience is the answer.

Those ring type PTO couplers are a PITA. But the government says they're safer for us because you don't have the end of the locking pin spinning around when the PTO is running.

It's very difficult to PULL back on the ring while you PUSH on the knuckle to engage the spline. I have found that it helps if you engage the tip of the spline in the knuckle first (it will only go on about 1/4") then PULL the ring back as you keep the knuckle engaged, then PUSH the whole thing on as far as it goes, then PULL the knuckle back until the detent balls snap into the groove of the tractor shaft.

There is NO EASY WAY to connect this style of coupler.

As someone mentioned above you match up the splines first as they can be coupled 1/4” together before any locking device needs to be retracted. Unlike the other posters I love the locking ring type and hate the push pin type. What engineering idiot designed a pin with pounds of spring pressure on it that is only 1/4” in diameter? How about a decent sized button on the end........

Lube can make coupling the female and male fittings easier.

I once used Fluid Film.

However, I have found any brand of spray DRY LUBE to work better for me.

WD-40 is too thin. I will assist coupling but burns/ drys out when shafts heat up. Removal is tough with WD-40.

I have NO problem using WD-40, it works just fine for me...

I also MUCH prefer the button to the ring!
