When the Zombie Apocalypse happens, those with gas fireplaces are gonna get cold.

I'll be toasty warm. :laughing::dance1:

We don't even have people stealing firewood anymore like when I posted a couple of years ago... back when Dad was alive all he had to do was put out the word a oak had toppled and friends would show up with their pickups and saws and leave nothing behind and be glad for the offer...

I use wood in Olympia when it is not a spare the air day... but mine is Doug Fir or Cedar and I think of all the Oak back in Oakland...

Gas keeps getting more expensive... just about a $1.70 a therm...

Just for fun I turned on the gas furnace and gas Jotul Bedroom Stove in the new house... started at 50 degees and took the house to 68 and the bedroom actually hit 71... Jotul is on or off with no thermostat...

Cost of gas for that one day $15.... so $450 for a 30 day cycle...

No previous experience with a Jotul Gas stoves... I have to say it makes a VERY nice fire and the stove is very well built and throws off a lot of heat...

The next day I fired up the Buck Stove Insert.. I guess you can call it an insert even if it was built for the insert since day one.

Also throws off a lot of heat, nice fire... the blower kicks on and throws out a lot of heat but is noticeable... it is a big insert.

I decided to give it a try after reading posts in this thread... when I engage the CAT the temp climbs to over 1000 degrees.

Much to learn as with an Estate Sale as-is purchase I have to figure out a lot on my own.

When the Zombie Apocalypse happens, those that know how to use their guns will survive. Fireplaces are secondary....

As luck would have it, I have an ample supply of guns and ammo. So I'll be protected, warm and fed. :D:licking:

The cost to run a gas fireplace is why I want a wood burner. Wood is cheap to get and good exercise.

Agree... plus personal satisfaction... at least for me..

The part I hate is being made out to be the destroyer of the Earth and fouling the air... of course those saying such have garbage cans overflowing with trash and no idea of the efficiency of a CAT EPA stove with well seasoned storm fall Oak...

I do often feel out of place in the SF Bay Area and I doubt things will change.

Closest I have found to the perfect place is 17 acres on Puget Sound... like living in a national forest/park... but even there I have found many similarities to the SF Bay Area... including mandatory spare the air days and bans on wood burning.

I agree steppenwolfe.

Ultrarunner,

Funny how Mother Nature can pollute via natural forest fires and volcanoes, but don't have a controlled clean burning wood stove or you'll destroy the planet. :confused3:

Yep... I attended the Air Management District public meeting before it was enacted...

I presented the fact that an EPA certified stove with seasoned wood is not a problem.

One of the panel conceded this but said it sets up a nightmare for enforcement so this is why the Air District wants a blanket ban... for easier enforcement and not based on science.

The other day I was out with my grade school niece and some of her friends... I asked the waitress for a straw which she gave me... the kids were horrified... saying straws are bad for the environment and kill sea creatures...

The waitress said under the new law the establishment cannot offer straws but can provide only if specifically asked by the customer...

We have always recycled... glass and newspaper for scouts and in general... always had a compost pile etc...

But my poor Mom, try as she might always gets mixed up with what goes into which of several trash containers on collection day... she is not alone among those that strive to do the right thing...

Carboard is for recycling but a pizza box goes in with yard trimmings...

Fat has to be in a paper/cardboard container and goes in with the yard trimmings.

Some plastic is recyclable but you need to check the number to see if it is on the list... and so it goes... glossy paper is trash and not recyclable.

Unpainted/Untreated wood goes in with yard trimmings... painted/treated is trash.

Palm fronds are trash and not green waste because the fiber clogs the composting machines...

Tires not mounted can go for bulky pick up but mounted tires cannot...

Batteries are bagged separate but lithium are not acceptable...

The irony is since the market has collapsed for recyclables... much is not going to landfill...

Incandescent Light Bulbs trash... CFL hazardous waste require trip to county hazardous collection facility during limited operation hours...

Empty dry paint cans trash... any liquid makes it hazardous waste to county collection facility...

I have often imagined starting a new life but in the meantime I live vicariously through Cat Fever...
