Awesome! Thanks for that. I'll have a look this evening. Hopefully that is easier than the PTO!
It is easy. It's heavy but it is very simple. I pulled mine. I have a thread on that one too. I think it's called "clemsonfor's three point rebuild" or something like that. It's really done for when I put a new o ring in the three point but you have to pull the top. While you have yours off of you do you may as well put a new o ring on the piston. It's only a few dollars and you have done about 70% of the work to do the job by removing it.

But this will be just to look if you end up having to remove the bull gear to pull the axle you still have to pull that PTO. And you may or may not want to drain the fluid, it will be half full of oil if you don't... obstructing your view. Haha

Clemsonfor was referring to removing the hydraulic lift unit which covers a large area on top of the transmission. Picture of what you can see with his removed. Started this thread a couple of hours ago and just got back to it so a little late.

You can see the Bull gears in this pic. The huge gears at the edge of the case on the top and bottom side. But as you can tell there is no way to remove them without pulling the PTO. You can spin them with the wheels in the air though and look for missing teeth on them from the top at least.

So again another update. I pulled the 3-point lift arm unit. WAY easier to remove than the PTO. I think it took me 5 minutes.

As I suspected.... missing teeth on the larger passenger side drive gear (bull gear?). In all there is a section of completely or 3/4 missing teeth. Oh I壇 say 5 teeth in total!
So, waiting on service manual to arrive, but in the mean time. Parts! Can I get new replacements or am I looking for donors? I found a guy in Portland (3hrs away) that I致e already confirmed has a a 240D with rear end internals in tact. I壇 prefer to buy new because there痴 no wear and it would save me 6 hrs travel time.
That appears to be the extent of the damage. Phew! The smaller drive gear driving that gear has some pitting and wear, but nothing major. Still needs to be replaced but it seem to sustain minor damage in comparison.
Is this a job for a busy do-it-yourselfer with 4 young kids and very little time or is it not that terrible of a job?

I知 not seeing how to post pictures on the mobile app so I will post pictures when I get to work

yes you can do it. I have seen i believe the bull gear done in detail either on Hoye or their forum i think? You cant buy them new its from a donor tractor. If you find one for a deal buy it. Hoye also has parts tractors and i am sure that there could be an available gear on what they have in the yard. Get in contact with Aaron at HOYE though the help ticket system under contact us. But i believe that its bolted to the inboard part of the axle shaft? maybe a puller needed i cant remember now. One of these guys may know where to find it?

Not sure you can remove the retaining bolt on the axle without removing the pto unit. The retainer has to be removed before the axle housing can be pulled.

Yes to do his repair you have to pull the PTO.

Here are some pictures of the carnage...

The very last pic you can see the broken off teeth at the bottom right.

Ow! Ow! Ow!!!

We've read that these transmissions are near indestructible. This is the first one with stripped bull gears that I recall reading about on here.

Bummer!
