So you would rather see a person in need of medical assistance die rather than have them trespass on posted land while seeking help?

Where I live at least, I am fortunate and happy and to say land owners are more compassionate even though we value our own privacy.

Reductio ad absurdum. I said no such thing.

We have lots of people up in N. Idaho that id be nervous going to their house....even if i was invited. We have people with 4x8 foot signs stating trespassers will be shot and buried... or simply 渡o trespassing. Owner has a backhoe ? I would not think of walking on their property. I have no trespassing signs and my property is fenced, however driveway up to house is open to traffic. There is a gate to the rest of property. Im a friendly sort, so not opposed to meeting someone at door.

If their Jahovia witness or mormons, i may tell them im a devil worshiper, but other than that im friendly. Ive been thinking of putting up a sign stating were practicing nudist...
And old. Who knows.

I do have a sign on main gate that says Caution, shooting range in use.... moving targets wanted.... inquire within? And thats no joke. 20190411_162643[1].jpg

Please remember this thread is about a house that cannot be seen from the road, like mine, why would anyone that needs "real" medical help travel on a private road with no homestead in sight or without a phone? Every 12 year old has their own phone.

Signs don't do much good. Everyone thinks they have a valid reason for ignoring them.

Gave up on signs, and just shut the gate all the time, home or not. That way the gate doesn't indicate if we are home or gone.

Uh, excuse me:

Shooting_Range.jpg

Put several of these up years ago when I made my two rifle ranges (100 yards and 260 yards) plus a pistol range.

Cut way down on the "tourists".

Bottom line is as a property owner I would encourage everyone to ask their insurance agent about how much an umbrella policy costs. I was surprised how little a $2M addition was that covers everything even auto. Ask yourself...if this person gets injured on my place is it worth getting sued over?
Other side of things is whatever happened to courtesy, respect, manners, knowing how to act, etc. Respectful people we would let them fish, hunt, give food to, flowers, etc.
It's just using common sense.

Very true, the umbrella policy of 1 mil can be had for about $80 a year.

I suppose a sign saying 'Land Mine Testing Range' would be over the top?

My parents had one on their gate that read 'Tiger Snake Sanctuary', kept a few at bay, change the species for your local area.

We finally put in a solar powered gate. Have driveway and postal alarms to let us know when someone and the postal lady is coming/here. My wife says the gate is the best thing we ever did. Cost nearly $5,000 though. Postal lady caught me without knickers a couple times before that. Didn't mind that. Just didn't like others just driving up to the garage.

Neighbor 3 over across the flood plain along the creek put up no trespassing signs when they adopted a little girl. He and I work to maintain the trails; so the signs to not apply to us.

Had a horse rider come in. She says she thought the trails were public! Put up no horse trespassing signs and rope at out property line. Found her and communicated with her, too.

Our neighbor to the left finally moved back here, at least about half here and half at somewhere in Pa. He surveyed along out line and had the surveyors put up ugly posts about every 100 ft. Turned out the line goes right down the middle of an area through the woods behind the house that I'd been kept mowed for Jap stilt grass. Asked him whether he wanted me to keep it mowed. He, in effect, said that he did not want my tractor on his property, probably because of his overconcern about insurance effects since he'd had a real estate business in Taxa_and_insur_atus_chusetts for many years looking after the 4 parents up there until they died.

I've since planted native shrubs in front of the most visible posts and placed on timber pieces along the line to keep ME off his property.

That is a real concern, when a person gets hurt the insurance companies are looking for the land owner for compensation so they are not held paying the medical bills.

Our country friends had a deck that collapsed and friends got hurt, no one sued but the insurance companies sure did. If you did not want them to sue then be ready to pay you own hospital bill. One bill was hundreds of thousands of dollars for an elderly lady who broke a leg with a long hospital stay and several surgeries. That's why you need a Umbrella policy.

The cute signs don't get it when someone gets injured and insurance companies come after you.

It doesn't have to be a negative or combative thread. Some people don't mind having people drop in on them, others enjoy quiet and privacy.

I like my quiet and privacy too, but I'm not going to obsess over it, nor am I going to threaten someone for merely walking up my driveway.
Jehova's Witnesses are not a big enough of a problem here to get worked up over. Maybe they come by once a year (if that), are always polite and leave if you tell them you're not interested. Door-to-door salesmen are so rare as to be non-existent. Don't think I've seen one in 10 years.

Quads and snowmobiles... Oh I dislike them. A lot.

2 years ago, we had a guy come in on his quad through the back gates of the property and tried to race out around the house, when he got spotted, he realized it might be better to stop and apologize. He then tried to sell us pot, telling us he was the local pothead on the mountain. What a moron he was.

Totally different situation, and one that definitely constitutes trespassing.

I don't have a problem with snowmobiles. I ride myself, and for that matter one of the state trails passes thru my property. They're quiet, don't cause any damage, and since the trail goes thru woods on my land there's very little problem with off-trail riders, only the occasional one who gets on my personal access track and realizes he's in somebody's back yard and turns around. Can't quite see how someone would mistake an 8' wide groomed trail with a single track, but I guess there are those who make the top half of the class possible, and I don't get worked up over it. Doesn't happen often enough to be bothered to post it.

ATVs are different. They're noisy, tear up the ground and seem to have a larger proportion of inconsiderate riders. Fortunately, not a big problem in my area, but further north there is a network of ATV trails, and there are enough inconsiderate riders to be a legitimate problem. I wouldn't even consider allowing them on my land.

During winter a few times we had people drive up and knock on the door, one was asking if we knew another neighbor and where they lived... I asked if they opened the gate to come up, and they said yes--he said he thought it was just a gate to keep cattle and horses in, and didn't think it was for people. Of course, he must have thought the no trespassing signs were for animals too. ;-)
Did he at least close the gate behind him on the way in, to keep the livestock in?

That's why, unless an ambulance takes you to the hospital, you don't say how you got hurt. You give the information to the medical people that will allow them to best treat you. No doctor needs to know where you where or specifics. I also NEVER fill out the forms the insurance company sends asking for details about the accident. They generally send two forms and stop. I have insurance for them to pay out. IF I got hurt and really felt it was caused by negligence that might be a different story. If I slip on ice in the winter, it's no ones fault. Ice occurs in the winter. It's part of life in this part of the country.

Yes, both ATVs and snowmobiles can be a problem. It's more the person than the vehicles. My parents had snowmobilers go by their bedroom windows (~30-40') after midnight! They were ok with the snowmobiles using the field, but not going by their bedroom when they are sleeping!

That would be nice but our ins took back the money paid and waited us out. Terms of insurance.

I also had knee surgery and the hospital took a lean on my property until they got their money. And that was just a wore out knee but the type of surgery was “usually” caused by an accident. They thought I would keep the settlement money but there was none, and I had personal insurance at that time also. I guess I’m Texas they are more aggressive.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I've never heard of such a case.

We dont have the snowmobile problem, but have had problems with the 4 wheelers riding thru my hayfield. Was so glad when some moved away...

We have problems with snowmobilers and atv'ers. It's the same guys, they just trade one form of racket for the other, depending on the time of year.

There should be a bounty on them. Shoot them, skin them out, and nail their hides to the barn door as a warning to others. They rip up and down our property line, right along "the trail" (that they illegally put in). But they also rip up and down our driveway, through our yard, chase our livestock, tresspass in the field behind our house, rip all the "no tresspassing" signs down, pulled down a section of fence blocking off one field, rip past our house on both the trail side and on our private property side late at night, with open exhaust 2 stroke "race" snowmobiles (aka LOUD).

The atv's rip up our grass, both in our yard and in the pasture south of the house (since they've torn down the fence, and torn down all the "no tresspassing" signs). They do donuts in our gravel driveway, and generally make as much nuisance of themselves as they possibly can.

They do the same things around each of our neighbor's places too.

Put a bounty on them.

Be a shame if that 2x4 full of spikes fell of the tailgate one night :confused3:
