Alright guys, I知 at a trouble spot. I pulled the brakes out. The seal has definitely failed at some point. There was no liquid visible but everything was coated in a goo or light film of oil. Drum came off the spindle no problem. Now I知 at the stopping point, or should I say stuck point. It appears that the brake hub housing needs to come off in order to pull the pinion shaft. I致e been very successful at separating bolted together gasket surfaces by tapping in a sacrificial pearing kitchen knife. It started to work with this housing but not anymore. Just a thin gap just barely enough to get a flathead screwdriver in but I don稚 want to pry on it. Any suggestions? Looks like it has two flat recesses like where one would hook a puller to. Can anyone confirm this? Also, what痴 the process for replacing the brake hub seal, since I知 here? Thanks

You have a leaky brake shaft seal I see. Those shoes are probably ruined. Me personally I would just clean them up with brake clean and re install hoping for some grip and life. There easy enough to get back into to change.

That's probably what I would do as well. Cleaned up. I might consider lightly lathe-turning the drum if there were divots or rust pits in the inside of the drum, but not for concentric wear - especially when using the same shoes. Those shoes look like composite type with lots of wear material left on them, I'd clean them off and just bolt it back together - maybe see what I could do with a seal from the outside.....all unless there is some really pressing reason to get the pinion shaft out. As Clemsonfor says, they are easy to get back into and you have other things to do.

But I'll look in my literature and see if anything comes up to help.

You can replace that seal from the outside. That's how it goes in. Mine went out on my 2000. I have a post on here somewhere documenting the replacement.

I think some of you need to read back further in this thread. The issue is the bull and pinion gear that he is changing. Not saying he doesn't need to work on the brakes but the housing has to come out to remove the pinion gear.

While I do appreciate the suggestions on the brake situation, you are correct. I need to pull the pinion gear that comes out through the brake assembly. The hub or casing doesn't seem to want to come off. Item #18 "Bearing Carrier Housing" on page 50 of the uploaded PDF. I'm looking into renting a puller this afternoon.

I wasn't sure if it had to be removed. You are probably right. I need to look at my books tonight just to get the parts straight in my mind.
