New Holland TD5050, Kubota ZD1211
Dad's old ZD28 is running great but I had lots of down time for repairs and one super hot dusty August day last year I had to stop mowing 3 times because the high heat alarm went off. Each time I had to run back to the barn and clean out the filters with compressed air.

So I had been kicking around the idea of trading in the ZD28 for one of the new diesel mowers but could not make up my mind which one, 1211 vs 1511?
Both looked great however a big difference in price $15,000 vs $20,000 more or less for the same size of cutters. I also didn't like the idea of less HP, ZD28 was rated at 28 HP and the 1211 at 25HP. According to the dealer huge improvement with the cutting deck more than made up for the loss in HP. Sounded like BS to me, who wants less HP in a big mower?

I ran the ZD28 one last time 735-736 hours and loaded it on the trailer to trade with it at the dealer. Before I did I set up 3 test runs- 3 patches of grass ranged from ankle to knee high grass. - 3" blade height and enough speed the ZD28 would bog down and I was forced to slow.

I called all the surrounding dealers asking for prices and really all of them had slightly different prices but they all ranged within a few hundred. I did have one dealer in Ft Smith, AR that wanted to charge me tax even with a farm tax permit?? Said he had too with mowers, I think he was just trying to raise his price. At any rate I ended up at the West Tulsa Kubota dealer, Ron was the salesman and he gave me the lowest price and the highest price for my trade - 3500.

I test ran both new mowers ZD1211 vs ZD1511. Both were nice. The seat was a huge improvement over the ZD28. The ZD1211 was just as quick as the 28. The ZD1511 was a little less responsive however I could easily hear the turbo whistle. It sounded like power to me. What to do? In the end I could not justify paying 5,000 more and with the possible headache of mechanical failure ie turbo or DPF so I loaded up the 1211. The cost out the door was 11,100.

Two hours after I unloaded the 1211 I knew I had a winner. In each of my test cuts the ZD1211 was superior to the ZD28. It obviously had more cutting power than the old 28 and a much improved ride. I did notice that if you have uneven ground the large 72inch cut will scrape on occasion but for me if you have large areas to cut a little scalping is a small price to pay.

Congrats i love my 1211 i went with the 60" debated it for sometime. Its definetly not shy on power the only thing that slows the engine down is rapid acceleration on hills. I think it has the double ribbed v belt because it will go through 3 ft tall grass and not bog down. My turd cadet would flat out stall in tall grass. I wish they sold the air ride seat as an option on the 1211. Enjoy the mower. Your price was pretty much on par with what i paid last year minus the trade and insurance

Thanks Dave, a couple of questions for you:

How long are your blades lasting?

How many hours do you have on your 1211?

How's it running now?

How often do you grease it? The manual didn't say much about it.

Any problems with dust or over heating ?

Thanks

Ive got a whole season 50 hours so far on the mower. Blades have little wear sharpened them once last year. Manual has a pretty good table on when to grease what. Maintenance schedule is also under the hood very specific on what to do daily , etc. Realize that daily is a commercial machine so i only do most of this once a tank of fuel.

The zd Machines are great if taken care of i know these machines will easily run 3000-5000 hours.

Thanks Dave - I found it under the hood. Your right it was clearly stated. The way the chart reads you are to grease the unit every 50 hours - that seems like a long time - I think I am going to shorten that to every 10 hours.

Thanks again - David

No problem it says to grease the spindles and pto daily which i stretch out to once per tank of fuel. All the rest are 50 hours most of these are low speed and low displacement I would not worry about shortening the cycle most mowers dont have anywhere near the 30 zirc fittings the zd's do.

One thing I would like to know is, it doesn't look like our blade spindles are sealed. Is thay accurate? It's a breath of fresh air if this is the case. I greased mine for the first time and got about 15 pumps o. Each before I felt some resistance. Upon changing the blades a couple times, I see you can see right up into the spindle and see grease, so is that where the grease is going? Or is the spindle inside that caked grease?

Good question - I put 30 pumps into each without feeling any feedback yesterday. How do you know when enough is enough?

On a positive note - these 1211 blades seem to be holding up much better than the old ZD28. I have 20 hours on them so far and they look great. Good news since they were expensive to buy new.

The grease just gets pushed right through the bearings and in to the cup that sits above the blade. I dont think you'll ever feel much resistance mine dont but after sharpening the blades I can see the grease is getting worked through the bearings

I've been running Kubota ZD's for 15 years now. (Great machines) I've had excellent results by pumping 2-3 squirts of grease into the spindles and u-joints at every fuel up. (8-10hrs)
It has worked well for me. Never a failure or problem and keeps new grease at the bearing all the time.
The u-joints on the drive shaft that goes between the engine and hydro unit are the hard ones to get to and get neglected most often, so don't forget them.
Also, of you mow around wire fences, (ie. farms) take the clevis pin out of the front casters on the deck and replace them with double nut bolts or lock tite the nuts. The fence wire will flip the clevis open and the caster goes into the blades without you knowing. The sound of the caster being ground up isn't nice, and definitely raises your pucker factor. I speak from experience. (more than once, because once just wasn't enough!)
