Just to add to the discussion.

I had to get the power steering cylinder rebuilt on my 325d. Ordered the seal kit from STI and just got it installed this week. Everything worked well except the pinion shaft that holds the end of the cylinder was worn to the point we had to install two circle clips to hold the assembly in place. I have no idea how many hours are on my unit since the hour meter is stuck on 145 hours. I would guesstimate a 20 year old unit to have between 3K and 4K hours. So far the little Mitsubishi diesel is holding up well. Last year I put in excess of 60 hours on it and it showed minimal oil usage.

No , it isn't "the shim". Look at the parts list again. There are several thicknesses.
Yes.
It would help to know where your area is.
Since you like learning, search YouTube for "set up ring and pinion".
This is not a project (changing the 2WD axle to 4WD) that I would try.

Gotcha. Yes I notice the many thicknesses and that's basically what I was referring to. I'd clearly have to get that shimmed properly.

I'm in Livonia, MI. which is SE area of Michigan.

I will check out some videos. Obviously the pinion and ring gear need to be lined up properly for use. Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't mind diving in and tackling new tasks myself... I've done this with quite a few things in more recent years. I don't go to companies for home repairs, I learn it by mostly youtube research and article searches and pick the brains that I need to and just get it done. I've taught myself to weld a few years ago and have built a few things and have made some money saving repairs on a different machines. I like the challenge and it keeps me sharp and active. Can't stand sitting around (for very long at least- ;) )...

This will eventually be a FEL 4x4 tractor that I used to distribute compost and the like to our garden in the back of our lot.

 Yep, I would have done it 50 or 60 years ago.

Good luck and keep us posted with your progress.

I agree with Xfaxman. I would look for a whole parts machine or at least the parts you need.
I believe it would be way cheaper and easier to use a donor machine. I've seen them sell for as littl as 500

Definetly. I have an entire 325D that I was planning on using. This is why I'm looking for the pinion and gear itself. I found the flange and driveshaft.

I think that they were referring to buying a donor 4wd 325 (with a blown engine transmission, or?) and getting the axle off of that ready to go.

!996 223D Groundsmaster.72" side discharge Model 30575 deck.

The part of the deck tag with the serial number is gone. I have written on the manual for the deck 690001 - 699999 with a ?

I tried looking through to see if I could figure out the differences in the decks between serial #'s 590001 & 999999

I missed seeing anything.

Does anybody know any differences that would help me narrow down my Serial number range?

Why do you need to narrow the range?

If it is the deck that originally came with the traction unit it will also be a 1996 model, in the range of 690001 - 699999. That continuous range means no changes were made for the year. If there is a change during the year, there will be two ranges, like this:

694568 - 699999
690001 - 694567

If you need a specific part, check the parts drawings for the first year made, 1986 and the last year made, 1997 to see if the part number changed. Then look at the part to see which looks like your part.

I went through all the drawings. Where I got thrown for a loop was a person I talked to at Toro said there was no deck with that model number made in 1996. I later got an email stating that it was the 690001-69999 that I thought.

I had an old link to the proper deck schematic. Sometime between the time I saved the link and now, Toro changed their format or something and the link I used prior was no good.

I need several parts - spindles, bearings, pulleys, seals. I think I need to replace all the pulleys x 4 and bearings on 2 of the spindles.

Any ideas on a way to save some money on this?

Call some local golf courses and ask where they get Toro parts. There are many Websites that sell Toro parts, just do some searching.

The residential dealers may not be able to order parts from the commercial division.

The best place to get part numbers is here: Toro Master PartsViewer

They put the year made in order, not all jumbled up like the online store did:
