Welding I-beams together

I was watching NOVA great cathedrals and thought of your building. All your stress will be where wall meets truss, a combination of downward and rotational. See arrow in pic

Royking, your picture shows what I was concerned with in my comments

For our Potato store with 12" Beams The peaks were all done with a flat plate welded on each beam and bolted together,
Same with the uprights bolted to a flat plate welded on top It was made in a factory and came as a kit ready to be erected
and bolted together. the engineer said it was rated to stand up to 50 ton weight on the roof. The uprights were 20' apart.
and a clear span of 60' wide

You have probably got some 12 beam left I cut a piece to fit where joist meets post see pic

That is a good idea. Unfortunately I don't. I bought four 30' beams and cut them 17' & 13'. 13' went in the ground and and 17' up top. After I trimmed them to size I had no piece over 6" long.

I did Add some more material to it though.

We got the tin on the ends today. Tomorrow if the weather cooperates we will do the roof.

Closing gable in change the whole structure, very solid now

Looks good, the added material at gable changes beam into a truss

Thanks guys. Now I can sleep better knowing not everyone thinks it is going to collapse.

Yes that is our Chihuahua or our little sewer rat as we like to call her.

When I built my steel building, I laid short pieces of galvanized roofing between the beams, resting on the lower flanges,,
that material is, in my case, 6 inches below the actual roof,,

That gap creates an air gap, and the summer heat can not radiate down,, it stays cool in the building,,

My SIL has virtually the same building about 1/2 mile away,, but he does not have the extra layer of material,,
his shop is like an oven in the summer,,,

Since my drop in pieces were only 48" long, the local roofing company had hundreds of them, as they were drops from cutting roofing to length,,
I was able to buy the pieces for $0.50 each,, which was WAY more than the roofing company could get for the drops as scrap,,,

Great idea and even better execution! I like using air as insulation. Actually, pretty effective.
