I need one of those. Let us know if you go commercial and start working your way north.:D

FWIW: My barn is built with trusses that are done the same way and is a 40' span spaced 20' apart. Also 12" beams although I don't know the weight. - and no reinforcing plates. I'll see if I can get a picture tomorrow.
Not a very good picture, but it's the only beam visible and a lot of sky background washes out the detail. It looks like the web and the flanges are welded and that's pretty much it.

Finished up the purlins today.

I am going to close in the gables and maybe about 4 of the sides. The tin won稚 be in until Thursday.

The connection between columns and the beam does not have a good path for stress. Consider welding plate on end of beam

I'd like to build a steel building, myself. Any way you could share the rough cost of materials? Either, expected price per foot or general difference in cost between steel and wood structures? I would like to build a 30x40 garage or something of the like.

I'm no engineer nor credentialed welder, just took note where weakest point was in things that failed. I find collar ties and tying columns togeather to prevent rafter spread add's more reinforcement than plates at joints. You likely plan doing that while filling gables in.

What you see pictured is $1,500 in materials. That is I-beams, concrete for the columns, and the purlins.

I expect the tin for the roof to be about the same cost. My guesstimate is around 3k total.

I was watching NOVA great cathedrals and thought of your building. All your stress will be where wall meets truss, a combination of downward and rotational. See arrow in pic
