Buying off CL and the buyer wants cash

We had a few different buy and sell publications. I swear, the good stuff always got scooped up by inside connections before the publications even hit the stores. At least, that doesn't happen with on line stuff.

It sort of does in this area with CL and chainsaws and any 3 point attached tractor item.

There are a few select people who make it a side cash business to run about as fast as possible buying up all of those items, then you see most of the items being sold by the few select individuals at a controlled price point.

They must be cash heavy and be able to go around while we are at jobs and but up the strong majority with cash in hand, they haul the items home and take new pictures and list them.

One of the guys that does this with tractor accessories lives near me and has about 2 acres of ground dedicated to a constant churn of farm tractors and 3 point accessories. He doesn't work a real job, that is his livelihood now. It makes me a little mad because if you want to get a deal on a good priced item, you've got maybe a day or 3 to beat him to it. They control the local market.

We bought a camper for our truck years ago from a widow.. her and her husband had bought it and used it twice before he died. We asked her how she wanted the money, she had never had $4000 in cash (20/50/100s) so she wanted that.. got the title signed and gave her the cash, hauled the camper home.. simple that many years ago. Not so easy now with all the scams.

We have one of those which was always a good source for deals. It even had it’s own ’reality show” for a couple of years. Before the internet they used to request on the front page that they get notified if you recieved a call about the item before the issue came out.
I once listed a 16gauge side by side which quickly sold. For some time afterwards I kept getting calls from the same (drunk) guy, asking if I still had it.

I thought about this thread the other day. I sold a hitch to a guy I had posted on c-list. He text me Friday and said he couldn't get it until Sunday. I said okay, I'll message you after church and lunch. He lived an hour and 10 minutes away. Had 2 other people contact me who wanted it after that and I put them on hold. I text him Sunday and he said he would be there between 2 and 3. He showed up, looked at hitch, handed me some folded up twenties and I put them in my pocket. He said you should probably count it, I said nah I'm good. It was $5 more than I was asking when I counted it after he left. I figured if someone tells you they are going to do something then holds to it they are probably pretty honest. He stayed for about an hour and we talked about everything.

So he hung around for an hour shooting the breeze waiting on you to give his $5change. :D

Hahaha. No. He told me it was $280, I told him I didn’t have any change. He said keep it. I didn’t count it until he left. He hung out for an hour because he’s from New York and I’ve never been there, lol. We were talking about farming there, I never realized there was so much rural area there. When I think of New York I think of New York City and that’s it.

Then, in some cases, I would have to charge you extra to cover income tax, and SALES TAX.

Only in Canada .....if you were selling as a business.
As in the USA, private sales in Canada are easy to do, and to keep private.

It's just the way the game is played, here anyway. You try and find a deal, but loose any guarantee or documentation. I have bought and sold enough stuff, and generally speaking it's never a problem. Problem starts when the cheque book comes out.

Like I said though, I usually have no trouble making an invoice. All sales final, AS IS, higher price and Sales TAX.

I have receipts for Canadian labor ("labour" in Canada) that I paid cash for!
I paid no sales tax, and the seller likely paid no income tax.
( in Canada ...believe it or not....labor is taxable)

CL blows. As much as I hate facebook, their Marketplace is where it's at around here.
