I'm needing a pole saw to trim low hanging limbs. I have about 6 acres of overgrown pine trees, and hundreds of Mountain Laurel that surrounds every tree, that needs to be cleaned up.
Haven't set a price range yet, but I suspect "good" ones are pretty expensive. On the other hand, I want one that will last. Any suggestions on which brand/model?

stihl
gas or battery
telescoping or not depending on how high you want to cut
telescoping are heavier and unwieldy but they get places the other cant

Agreed. We started to get a few of the battery type telescoping pole saws at work recently. I've been very impressed with them. Extremely light and well balanced. I would still recommend gas for heavy use.

There are GREAT reviews on the battery powered Lynxx pole saw from Harbor Freight..
I have a Remington gas powered pole saw that I have all the attachments for.. its nice to be able to switch to whatever I need to do..
BUT its a bit heavy..
I have had to replace the carb, on account of laziness.. I left gas in it..
The Lynxx has been reviewed after running all day w/ the battery still charged.. They even bought a 2nd battery but have yet to use it..

"Best Pole Saw"
Many are pretty good. Just my opinion.

I was considering the lynx because they were inexpensive. I used to have a troy built the I broke twice but I was able to take the middle section out and use it as a 5' unit. I used it a fair amount like that because I could just reach into bushes easily and cut low branches etc. Do you know if the lynx can come apart and be used as a short unit? My stihl is unable to make that short. If they made a real short stihl I would buy it.

I have the Stihl HT101 12' telescoping saw. Had it 5 years..works great. I run 100% gas in all my engines...which makes a big difference ! Paid $500....but well worth it.

100% gas and it hasn't seized up? I use 50:1 oil mix in my 4 year old Stihl Kombi. :D

I first bought a Troybuilt that worked ok till I ran over the powerhead with my RTV (knew I should not have laid it on the ground behind me). The rest was ok. I priced some of the Stihl and echo power heads but they were just too expensive. I got the Poulan with the saw attachment for much less (about half the price) than just buying a big name engine.I have had to replace the chain twice due to hitting steel objects like fence post while trimming the overgrown fence line but no damage to the saw. The engine is a bit heavy but it came with a tiller attachment that I have actually used a few times in the garden and flower beds.

For items that only require occasional use (like once a year), I cant see paying $500 for them when a $150 one will work just as good. If you are trimming professionally or need one daily then perhaps the lighter weight would be worth the triple price. As for me, if I get tired of holding up the saw, I just take a break. I try to completely remove all the gas from the tank and run the carb dry when storing. So far that has worked well for me.
