Start/Stop technology

The computer uses this sensor to tell the alternator how much to charge the battery. You probably shouldn't be disconnecting it.

Most alternators have an internal regulator that sense the system voltage by the wire at the alternator. I have to believe that this second sensor is more to measure the voltage fluctuations and health of the battery. If draw on the battery like A/C, lights, trailer brakes, accessories, are taxing it too much, then it will read it and limit S/S.

I have a KIA Stinger with the same Start/Stop feature. The default is on, so every time you start the vehicle you learn to also turn off this feature (push a button) when you fasten your seatbelt. There are a bunch of provisions that the start/stop feature is disabled automatically, you will just have to check your owners manual. I know on mine if it is set in a different mode besides "economy mode" or it the temp outside is above 95˚F, how you brake, etc....

It is annoying and I wish the default setting would be off but it probably has to be on to meet the government fuel requirements.

I do like the "coasting" feature it disconnects the drive shaft so the car's rpm drops way down to about 700 rpm, about half of the RPMs if this feature was not included.

He is talking about turning the cruise control on/off not setting it with the ability to hit the resume button. If you don't know that it has an on/off feature, you probably have it turned on and are only using the set/resume feature.

Our new Toyota also has this. I think it's a pretty silly "feature" but I do appreciate that Toyota's implementation is also controlled by brake pressure. You have to hold the brake pedal past a certain point for the car to allow the engine to stop, and it only takes an hour or two of driving to get a good feel for where that point is. The cut off is a little past where I normally hold the brakes at a stop, so it doesn't activate except when I consciously decide to press a little harder, like if I know I'm going to be sitting still for a while. That kind of design detail really makes or breaks the usability of something like this.

I wouldn't worry about the starter wear and tear. I have 100K on mine with no problems.

The starter and battery are designed for this function.

Then they found out it was a non-issue......just drive it.

I have been convinced to forget about it. Thanks everyone for you're help.

Now if I can just remember if I have a nova or a malibu.

No, it doesn't turn off. It releases, but it doesn't turn off. There's an on/off button. There's a set button. There's a resume button. Once you turn the on/off button to on in a Chevy, it stays on forever until you turn it off again, no matter how many times you turn the ignition off or on. In a Ford or Toyota, each time you turn off the ignitions in the vehicle, you have to turn the cruise control on again before you can use the set button.

Ever time I shut key off.... It turns off cruise off until I turn it on again... Nothing to do with resume cruise after braking.... Don't understand the comment "its on all the time"....

Yours is different than mine... Everytime I turn key off.... It kills cruise until I physically turn it back on (nothing to do with reset or resume) .... Been driving this vehicle for long time, think I know about it's kinks and foibles....
