How much gas could you save doing that? It seems like a lot of wear to accomplish not much.

Once knew a guy that had twin 70s (or maybe they were 69s, can't recall now). One was stock, the other wasn't. He'd pick a race with the stock one and lose. Then he'd say ' let me go home and tune it up a bit'. He'd come back with the other one and the second race would end much differently.

I edited my question. We have a Malibu, not a Nova. I don't know where that came from, I have never owned a Nova. I've had lots of Chevy Impala, Malibu, Chevelle, pickup, I even had a Biscayne once but never a Nova.

Don't know what you're missing!

Not sure about the latest systems, but on earlier ones, forcing the A/C to stay running was often enough to suppress S/S.

lt's not just the starter........ I know for sure that some recent model F150s also have an auxiliary electric-hydraulic pump for the trani...... I believe what it is used for is to keep the hydraulic pressure up with the engine stopped, aiding the re-start roll-away.

Adding all sorts of complexity and cost, just to maybe gain 0.01 mpg in city driving....... We'd accomplish more if we banned drive-through lanes..........

We have a 2017 Nova with the push button start, no keys. When stopping at a traffic light the engine dies just like it is supposed to.
Can this gas saver system be bypassed? I am concerned about wearing the starter out.

Edit.... We have a Malibu, not a Nova. :confused3:

This guy says if you turn on the air conditioner and put it in yellow mode (not green eco mode) the car won't auto shut-off.

AFAIK, the main point to start-stop is to reduce emissions.
It started long ago in Switzerland and France, where there are actually laws mandating the behavior; however, depending on traffic situations, it could increase your mpg as much as 10%. Obviously not in mostly highway driving, but if there's a lot of red lights on your city trip...

I'm all for the function; when I have to stop for a while - such as when waiting for a pilot car to escort in partial road closures, I'll kill the ignition manually. I wouldn't do it right and left manually, but it kills me to see people waiting five minutes with their engines idling.

There is a work-around but it is kind of touchy.
When we come up to a stop, if we don't press the brake pedal too hard, it will stay running. But that only works on a level road. If there is any slant to the roadway the brake has to be pushed hard enough to kill the engine so we don't coast.

This is why I would prefer a hybrid car over the start/stop combustion engine. My friend has a Camry hybrid. It's pretty nice. The engine turns off at stops and the batteries provide instant movement when the light turns green, as opposed to the short, but very perceivable start-up delay on the combustion engine only cars.

Not too crazy with the feature in my 18 f150. Simple switch in the dash to disable., just have to do it every time you drive. Prob an override for the Chevy too.
