The computer uses this sensor to tell the alternator how much to charge the battery. You probably shouldn't be disconnecting it.
Most alternators have an internal regulator that sense the system voltage by the wire at the alternator. I have to believe that this second sensor is more to measure the voltage fluctuations and health of the battery. If draw on the battery like A/C, lights, trailer brakes, accessories, are taxing it too much, then it will read it and limit S/S.
