Sig, good on you for fostering. Our Sammie is a rescue. She was 20 months when we got here. First owner got her as a puppy, paid big bucks to a professional trainer, and just before the one year guarantee expired, took her back and said they didn稚 want her. Four other couples looked at her but she wouldn稚 have anything to do with them. She warmed to my wife first, then our then 16 year old. We had an adjustment period. She tried to claim my wife. When I learned what was going on, I threw a bean bag at here when she tried it. She warmed to me soon after that. Now she follows me everywhere and won稚 hardly leave my side. She takes a firm, gentle hand, exercise, attention, some attention and kindness and she is completely devoted. The trainers did a great job training us to keep her trained.
Rsky, glad to hear the little girl is getting better and going home soon. My thoughts, prayers and well wishes for her. I agree it looks like a crackdown on large dogs is coming for your area.
Like Sig, I won稚 leave my dog with a child. There is just too much that can go wrong. My brother had a Lab that was as gentle as could be. He bit my niece once when no adult was around. It seems the nieces friend was tormenting the Lab and backed it into a corner. Supposedly my niece tried to comfort the dog and got one bite. That caused quite a stir in the family for several years.
Some dogs seem to just flip between being friendly and blind rage and back in a heartbeat. Pit bulls in particular have that reputation. But any dog can do it. A neighbor has a mutt, mostly boxer but some pit also I suspect and that dog is s light switch. Can be tolerant, almost friendly one second and the next it wants to remove my liver. The owner understands I don稚 want but I will if I have to. Since we realized that he put up a secure fence and has done a good job keeping it home.
I知 sure pits get blamed a lot for things they didn稚 do but my guess is they do do a lot of damage and their reputation for traumatic damage certainly exists. Those dogs take a strong responsible owner. Unfortunately there are some people who are lousy owners and have no business with big strong potentially dangerous dogs.
I hope the girl continues to recover and somehow people near you become much better dog owners.
