Steriod shot in knee, ???

Well after all these years old body is wearing down. Had a pain in my knee for over a year. Just limped on and thinking I must have sprained it or twisted it. It gradually got worse. Finally had to go to VA. They said I have arthritis in in pretty bad and need a steroid shot and if that doesn't work might need a knee surgery. Have any of you ever had a steroid shot? How long did it last? Did it cure your pain problem?

I had a shot in January of this year due to a torn meniscus. Did wonders but it has worn off about 2 months ago. Also had one about 2 months ago in the heel for plantar fasciitis. That shot hurt like a son of B. It only lasted about 6 weeks and now I'm hobbling on both legs.

I've had knee trouble for years, like 20 years. I had the shots for a couple of years, and they worked fine. But eventually the lasting results got shorter and shorter. the last shot I got lasted 90 minutes, and that was due to the Lidocaine that was mixed in with the cortisone when it was injected. Didn't feel a thing!

I'd suggest to try the shots a couple of times. You can always do the surgery. Hopefully, you'll only have to have it "scoped" rather than replaced. Recovery for having it scoped is a few weeks if you do the PT. I'd hold off as long as you can on the replacement. I had mine replaced finally about 8 months ago, I'm 67, and it was the most painful procedure I've ever had done, including open heart surgery. I'm just now getting to where I can walk without a limp. Knee still hurts at night, and as someone else said, don't plan on kneeling for more than 3 seconds after you get it replaced...ever.

Last year at this time I hurt my shoulder with some repetitive motion that involved lifting 30-40 pounds. Twas on vacation so it was not much fun. The shoulder slowing healed but after six months it was not improving so I went to the doctor. The Xrays showed no damage but just inflammation so the PA gave me two choices. I could take 800mg of Ibuprofen for a MONTH or I could take a shot. Since there was no way I was taking 800mg every day for month, I took the shot. Also figured I could always take the Ibuprofen if the shot did not work, but if I took the meds and they did not work, I would have to return for the shot.

Soooo, I took the shot which worked.:cool2: For about 4-6 weeks.:( So I took 400-600mg of Ibuprofen four days a week. That helped but I was not really getting better. Somehow I heard about Turmeric and bought this, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0100US7HW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I just picked that supplement and tried it. It sure is expensive for a bunch of cheap spices in a pill but I am paying for convenience. One could take far more of the spice in a glass of water for far less money.

Anywho, the stuff works. :confused3::shocked: My should is much better, not 100% but I am not sure it will ever be 100%. I take two of the "pills" a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I take a bunch of supplements and I just added these to the mix. If I have more discomfort than usual, I just take an extra pill or two. I don't have to worry about what the "pill" is doing to my liver like I would with Ibuprofen. The stuff works for us. We are giving it to the kids when the complain of a headache or some other ache or pain.

A cooking show came on TV last weekend and they had a guest chef on the program. He was Indian and was showing how to cook some Indian dishes. He mentioned that Turmeric was an anti inflammatory AND an antibiotic.

I have not heard of black pepper being and anti inflammatory but it sure does spot bleeding. Learned that somewhere and used it one night when the wifey cut herself pretty bad. Added some pepper to the wound and the bleeding stopped.

Later,
Dan

The pepper helps with the absorption of the key ingredient in turmeric. This will cut your cost.......

If any of you guys are still young, take care of your bodies and dont overdo it with lifting or other hard work like I did. I am also not a believer of running for exercise, that just wears out the joints faster. Do some other exercise that is not so much pounding of the joints.

+1 on that. I used to run in my 20s, 30s and into my early 40s. Funny how once you hit 40 all the abuse you subjected your body to comes back to bite you. Quit running, and gradually my knees got better, when I got into my 60s they started bothering me again, but nowhere near to the extent they did when I ran. I'll probably need replacements someday, but hope to put that day off as long as I can.

With mine it's not so much pain as it is lack of flexibility...I compare it to trying to push a wheelbarrow with a flat tire.

If you have a steroid shot and are diabetic, it will raise cane with your sugar levels.
If you have a total knee replacement, there are some limitations on kneeling.

Yeah....like it will bring tears to your eyes if you put any pressure on the knee cap. Forget ever kneeling on that knee again.

I had steroid shots for several years ( they provide some temporary relief), had the 'rooster comb' shots (that did nothing for me), then had the left knee replaced in Feb 2016. To this day, there is a distinct, loud, POP with every step. They definitely did not get that one right.

Find yourself a GOOD podiatrist. Mine wrapped the foot with athletic tape, and fixed my plantar in a few days after I'd hobbled around on it for months. Primary doc gave me the cortisone shot in the heel, it did nothing. Podiatrist said very rarely is injection warranted, and can in fact cause damage.

My 3 year old grand daughter is also on that Turmeric stuff, I thought it was spices that people put in cooking, guess you could cook with it, maybe the OP could try it. When I read post like this I dont think awe that wont happen to me, instead I think when is this going to happen to me.

2 Corinthians 12:8-9 King James Version
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

How old are you? The reason I ask is because my wife is 54 and here knees are shot. Her doctors do not want to do knee replacement surgery on her at this age because she is too active, and too young for how long they last. They really want to wait until she is in her 60's so they can do it once and never have to do it again. To keep her going, once a year she gets three injections of something made out of a roosters comb. This provides a cushion from the bones and eliminates all the pain that she is having. So far, it's been working great!!!

Thanks, I will give that a shot so I don't have to get a shot.:laughing::laughing: Unfortunately, we just got a new bottle of what we have been using but I ordered the stuff you suggested.

Thanks,
Dan

Yep same thing I have done only I get them every 6 months. So far they have been working, but I am quite a bit older . . . I figure they give me substantial relief, enough not to go under the knife.
