My BIL was told to hold off in knee surgery too...he's 70-ish and not particularly active. He told me the doctor's rationale, don't recall offhand what it was other than wanting him to hold off until it was more necessary.
Last time I asked, my doctor told me that 75-78 is the "sweet spot" for knee replacements...you're still young enough to heal reasonably quickly but old enough where you're not likely to ever need it done again. Obviously YMMV.

I had my right knee replaced when I was 70; almost 9 years ago, so maybe it won't last much longer. Of course, I'm not at all sure the rest of me will last much longer either.

You guys aren't giving me the warm and fuzzies! Through my twenties and thirties I have not treated my body very well (probably like a lot of you guys) and was always the one to call when heavy lifting was involved.

I'm 43 and have had a bad knee for 15 or so years. The root of it I believe, was a high school football injury. I saw a orthopedic surgeon about 7 years ago and he said that if i can live with the pain, I'm better off.

Now my lower back is giving me trouble. Sitting here at work with a heating pad on...

I'm 43 as well and have 3 bulging disc in my neck, right on top of each other and the doctor told me the same thing. Put up with it as long as you can, that was 9 years ago. I very rarely get a good night sleep, a full one is out of the question. Not mentioning the bad left shoulder, lol.

Back surgery for me was around when I was 45. That ended all running for me (I would run at least 5 miles a day every day, rain sleet or snow for a good 27 years and I was even pretty good at it).

Now in my mid 50's when I go for a walk, the question is how bad I may hobble due to the arthritis in the one knee.

My Doctor told me to never volunteer to let a surgeon cut on you until the pain is life altering, because sometimes the fix is worse than the problem.

So I waited for right knee replacement until I couldn't trust my knee to work. It would buckle and I would nearly fall down. Every time I stood up I had to slowly rock left to right testing the knee to see if it was ready to walk with. And when I was walking, sometimes my knee would send my foot out to the side leaving me to stumble around trying to stay upright.

I'm about 1.5 years out with the new knee and biding my time on the other knee.

You’re forestalling the inevitable. Quitcher whinin’ and get the replacements. You’ll be a much happier man and your friends will thank you for it. Trust me. They’re tired of hearing how much this or that hurts.
Day of surgery (I mean the very minute you wake up from surgery) you’ll wonder what took you so long.

I had one in my back. Doc said it was 50/50 for it to work. Thankfully I am in the good half. Try it. If it works great. If not look at other options. Our anecdotal advice is not useful.

I had meniscus surgery and a torn PCL on my left knee repaired which was good for ten years until the arthritis set in. Tore the right one too but I never had it cut. I go every six months for the rooster comb shots. The right knee has been nearly pain free and it has been two years since shots on that one. The left not so much. It would be better if I did the exercises but I am busy for that, lol!

The clinic that we use does a series of five shots, once a week under x-ray. I know of some clinics that do the three shots but without x-ray. In the case of both knees, Medicare no longer allows both at the same time so that means making the 75 mile trip each way to Lexington, KY once a week for ten weeks because my wife gets both knees done.

The clinic is a busy place with plenty of people driving much further than what we have to. I have talked to people whom have had a knee done but would rather do the shots instead of having the other knee done at least for the time being.

The surgeon that repaired my shoulder for a torn rotator said that I was one of about six hard headed guys that he was helping because we put it off so long. In my case, I could no longer reach the radio in my F150. I ended up being under for six hours while the surgeon used teflon screws and cables to hold everything together. I put the work into the therapy but still I did not think that I would ever be able to raise my arm up again but I did. My therapist had spent his army career at Walter Reed so he was good at his job.

Guess we all did stupid things when young that come back to haunt U later.

My lower back reminds me of a bad spill* I took as a teen when I was practicing barefoot water skiing, yes you heard that correctly.
With the tow boat holding about 30 MPH we'd step off of the skis and actually go barefoot.
Got so that I could even cross the boat wake and stay up for a fair while.

*as I recall I "tripped' and somehow my feet touched the back of my head which left my lower end totally numb to the point that I could only crawl out of the water.
I seem to recall that probably only the fact that it was quite cold (early spring that swelling was minimal and the cold deadened pain.
Then my right shoulder reminds me of the many years of toting a heavy briefcase when making calls as a sales rep. (Those catalogues were sure heavy)
