Need / want a pickup truck

A friend was approached by his grandson, probably not even 20, who was asking that he co-sign for a hundred grand (give or take) loan for a new truck since he apparently got a job providing transporation services for a company.

You can buy a decent house up here for that kind of money... and it won't rust out in 10 years.

70-100K on a pickup truck is nuts.. Junk in 7-10 years, that's a poor financial decision unless you have tons of money or you are making money with the truck..

I know people who have $900 a month pickup payments that make 45K a year..

Junk in 7-10 years? I bought a 2010 Ram 1500 that I traded in 2017. It had about 125K miles on it and looked and ran like it was new at 7 years old and had a trade value just a bit below 20K. No rust, mechanically perfect. And I'm in MN where the winter driving is HARD on vehicles. The most degraded part of it was the edge of the driver's seat showing wear from sliding in and out of it. I only traded it because my needs changed and I went to a 2500. Now I'm not saying that 70K+ for a truck is reasonable, but they can and do last a heck of a long time these days. Though 70K is a ton of $$, my thought is that if you're going to buy a vehicle for the long haul you may as well get the options and features that make you happy during that time. I've owned enough vehicles that were lacking something (looks, features, reliability) that I changed my ways to spend enough to keep me happy throughout its life. And man have I been happy with my vehicles for a long time...

Bought my 2001 F150 in 2005 with 15,000 miles on it for $9500. I've put about 130,000 miles on it with no mechanical issues. Squirrels eating wiring has been the only major issues.

I love my plain jane regular cab long bed v6. 20+ mpg. No power windows or door locks, no carpet, vinyl seat. Hauls over 30 bales of heavy hay. What more could I ask for? I've never towed anything with it though.

If I ever buy another truck it will be a 4x4 Ford regular cab long bed work truck used with low miles and no plow work.

Rams are showing rot in five years around here.. 7-10 year old trucks here have at least 120K on them.. A truck you pay 60K for isn't worth much in 7-10 years..

I have a former employee with a 8 yr old ram, and he thinks he could only get scrap value from selling it

Other than cracked dash, my 2001 dodge 1500 was great. Best truck i had.

Heck my d250 made it 350000 miles and 25 years mostly up north before the rust got it.

Only engine/ drive traine work it ever needed was fuel oil air filters.

I always chuckle when somebody makes a comment like this. The law of averages is that some trucks will last longer; yet the majority of vehicles that age have gone to the shredder long ago.

Apparently how you treat it makes a difference because that is the antithesis of my experience.

Does that include not driving it in northern winters? If the frame and cab are all rotted out, they really aren't worth much more than scrap.
