Apparently how you treat it makes a difference because that is the antithesis of my experience.

I am not sure how you treat it can cause literally every body panel to rust massive holes in it, but maybe you kept your washed daily and garaged.

Who knows......

I drove it for 6 years in Las vegas with holes in the roof. No rain, no problem. But it lived in Michigan. And Illinois most its life and it showed. But it ran so good

Does that include not driving it in northern winters? If the frame and cab are all rotted out, they really aren't worth much more than scrap.

I live and drive in Minnesota winters. One of the saltiest road systems in the winter. Like I said, the extreme rusting you mention isn't that common for my vehicles or in my experience around here. Automakers seem to do a much better job in recent decades than they used to do. I've not seen 'extreme rust and rotting frames and cabs in 7-10 year old vehicles.

Actually wash them very little in the winter. Garaged, yes.

How are the aluminum Fords holding up?

A friend was approached by his grandson, probably not even 20, who was asking that he co-sign for a hundred grand (give or take) loan for a new truck since he apparently got a job providing transporation services for a company.

I wouldn't co-sign for any of my kids college must less a car. I'm not jeopardizing my retirement.

"No, but **** no" would be my answer.

The new F 150 D get 30 hyway and 25 city. That is very attractive to me and it can tow 11500. I don't often need to haul more than that it also has a 2,000 pound payload. Not sure what the GCVWR is
The drawback with D is the increased cost of maintenence and initial cost over a gasser

I looked at the numbers for this and the dodge very closely. And the fuel numbers are enticing at first onset. I believe the F150 D numbers are a bit better than rams but are very close. What I came to was this. Pure performance torque was good, but the ecoboost was just as good if not better and regular NA engines were close performance wise. The D option is about 3-4k for the engine, ecoboost engine is only about 1500 and regular NA engines no cost. Around here diesel is usually around 25-30 cents more per gallon sometimes even 50. But even factoring in 25 cents more a gallon and a little higher annual maint charge, the diesel engines because of the upcharge of 3-4k and driving around 15k a miles a year, wasnt going to break even or start paying you back for around 5 years or so. So when you blend cost and performance together I really didnt find the D option in 1/2 tons all to appealing. Now what could change that would be cheap diesel or if you drive more than 15k miles a year. For what its worth when I was looking two dealer in different town didnt have any of Ram diesels on the lot and basically in other words said dont buy it.

I always liked FORDS segmented window, lower at the mirror. I don't know why.

Better visibility. Sit in any other truck, you notice right away. Feels like you're looking out of a cave.

You're right, my 04 4wd, 6 cylinder, 5-speed manual averaged 15... 14 in Winter and 16 in Summer. Two years ago I gave it to my son with 90,000 miles on it and it still drove like new not squeak and still with the original brake pads. I did nothing to that truck other than change the fluids regularly myself. Ridgeline is a better truck for how I use it and gets 20-21 mpg in the same type driving. I do miss the manual transmission sometimes though.

I still maintain if one wants a full size truck and they plan on keeping it for 100,000+ miles a Tundra might make sense because the extra gasoline it uses will likely be offset by not having repairs along with good resale. Personally I wouldn't even consider buying a used truck with over 100,000 miles that had a turbo gasoline engine.

I've had a few issues with mine. A wiring harness rotted out and had to be replaced, rotted brake lines, rear axle seals a couple of times (breather tube blocked up, probably), and the 4WD actuator stopped working (expensive). The motor and tranny have been trouble free.

I bought it with 29,000 miles on it and have 112,000 miles on it now. I keep it in the garage and use it when I need a truck. Otherwise, I either ride my 48mpg Yamaha FJR1300 or drive the 30mpg Subaru Legacy.

I almost bought a new truck a couple of years ago but it didn't make sense to me. I had a paid off truck already, and all I was going to do was trade one 15mpg vehicle for another 15mpg vehicle with the added bonus of a monthly payment on top of that, all to serve the same purpose. So, I kept the truck I had and bought an AWD car instead. Maybe (God-willing) when I retire in 6 years and don't have to commute to work I'll rethink things.

I hate the "push button" 4wd actuators used in trucks now. My friends Dodge failed twice. My 04 Tundra still had a manual shift knob for engaging 4wd and low range but I believe all Tundras and even Tacomas now have push button. Which brings up another point; why no low range in 2wd? There are a number of instances it would be useful.
