Propagating Grape Vines? My wife purchased a Seedless Concord Grape plant last year,,

As expected, the vine is covered in tasty grapes right now,,

I was wondering, if the end of the vine is buried, will it grow a new vine like a blackberry does?

I would love to propagate a few vines and give them to my daughter,,
Any hints?

I've often wondered the same thing and have been meaning to try it but never think of it in the spring. I have started cuttings just to see if I could; taking some of the stems I pruned off, dipping them in growth hormone https://www.lowesforpros.com/pd/gar...78&gclid=CKOoxY2EiuQCFU72swod8kEM9g&gclsrc=ds
and sinking them into my sand bed. (A pot of sand would also work.) After they rooted I transferred them to pots and they grew well until about this time of year, when I got tired of watering them and let them die.

With most cultivars of grapes, if you take cuttings when dormant and immediately stick them into the ground, they will root. That is how most wineries that I know seem to do it. They take prunings of their most productive vines to expand the vineyard. I am going to try that this winter with muscadine grapes that I started this spring. Will post how it worked out next year.

I have grown concord grapes that way in the northeastern US.

I believe it's better to graft onto wild rootstock.

When I bought my first house many years ago part of the property was over-run with some sort of wild grapes. They did seem to root at various spots where part of the vine was in contact with soil. Not very good tasting, and they were climbing everything. Took a few years but I pulled them all out.

Grapes propagate easily. You can bury a shoot and it will root. Dormant cuttings will root if you place it in damp soil with heat, a rooting hormone helps too. Green cutting can be rooted using a cloner (basically a box filled with water with a pump that sprays a mist of water constantly).

However, if they are grafted onto rootstock they probably won't thrive on their own roots.

I have 3,000 vines.

The vines will "harden off" for the winter. You will need to prune the vines during the winter while they are still dormant. When pruning, look for a shoot you've cut off where you see a lot of green. Cut the pruning about a half inch from a bud. All you need to do is plant it with the bud in the dirt and it will grow. Make sure you have a number of buds on the above ground part of the vine, too.
