I don’t have the second pto mark on my rev counter and without knowing what rpm to set the engine at I can’t use the second pto setting

If your standard 540 is 2500 engine rpm, your economy will yield 540 at around 1750 engine rpm.
Most implements are not that critical as to the rpm they are operated at, a generator would be the most critical.
A mower or chipper if its working good and running smooth is doing good it doesn't matter much if it turning 450 rpm or even 500rpm.
When I'm using my sickle bar mower half the time is being run at maybe 300 rpm or less.,
my brush hog quite often will be at less then 540 and at times it will be above 540.
I was tedding hay today for several hours and the pto was in standard speed but the tractor was only turning 1500 rpm,
the tedder was doing an excellent job of fluffing up the hay at that speed which was about 324 pto rpm.

I think common sense should come into play here. You can pretty much tell if your pto powered implement is being over sped. If is shaking, vibrating, excessively noisy and/or making you nervous to operate, you are running it too fast. Besides, under-speeding some implements can be as bad as over speeding. I think the reason the 540e came into existence is because too often people had to needlessly over rev their engines to get the implement to work right. In truth most people pay little attention to what the actual rpm of their pto is at any given moment. Not very often it is actually 540 rpm. There is nothing particularly sacred about 540 rpm other than it is a target rpm for pto equipment manufacturers. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't be afraid to use you second pto setting in the least little bit.

You are bang on, yesterday I did give it a try with my flail on easy to cut short grass and set the rpm at 2000 with the pto in 760 and all seemed fine and quieter so I agree I need to apply common sense and on light work lower revs and higher pto 760
Thank you for all the replies, I just wish machine sellers would give more guidance on handing over a new machine to customers.

Just do the math. My 6530 has 3 speeds and an adjacent sticker identifies the engine speed as a function of the PTO speed selected. The input to the implement has to remain at 540 (for those units) so with different PTO ratios, just drop your engine rpms for the higher PTO ratio numbers. Main usage is for light loads and fuel economy. Example when mowing light crops with my 6' hog, I will run mid or high on the PTO selector and lower engine rpms accordingly.

They also expect you to use a little common sense and also use "what feels about right"... most equipment operation is by feel many times,

which is why many people don't need any manual to run equipment properly.

MANY people are NOT mechanically inclined. The tractor is just another appliance to achieve an end result.

If you aren't then hire it out. Having ANY tractor entails some responsibility as far as mechanicals go. I don't view my tractors as appliances at all, to me they are tools.

Same here, but you have to understand other people. Had the screwdriver argument with my lady friend again on the weekend. She is highly interested in home renovation and improvement and even worked at Home Depot many years ago, but doesn't have the SLIGHTEST interest in knowing the difference between a philips and robertson screwdriver!

I wonder how many people know the difference in those 2 by those names. Too many people probably know the Roberson by a name that describes it's tip shape.

On my 5520 the tach is marked 2,000 rpm is 540 2nd and 2,500 rpm is 540 1st.
The mechanical engine doesn't limit the engine speed in 540e/pto 2nd/760
