Buy John Deere MT3668 Hydraulic Oil Dye| hartvilletool.com is the fix. The sight glass on my old L3200 was worse than the dipstick on my L4060 with clear SUDT2. I havent gotten any for the L4060 yet & the half a jar (tablespoon ish) I had left a few years after the L3200 was dried out.

That would work but considering the capacity of my transmissions, each tractor would require 3 bottles each. 6 x 13 bucks is quite a bit when I can buy the already dyed Chevron THC for bit less than the SUDT from my dealer. Knowing JD, it's probably green as well and I'm partial to orange and the THC is orange in color.

The big issue with Chevron THC is, you just cannot go on the net and buy it or at least buy it for a sane price, you have to buy it from a jobber, which I do in a 55 gallon drum.

Instead of changing the brand or quality of the oil, I changed the color of the dipstick itself. Now the oil level is easier to see.

Half a bottle (film canister sized, assuming you are familiar with that ancient device) of the red dye made the 4-5 gallons in my L3200 pinker than ATF. I'm sure it will freak out the next mechanic if/when the guy who bought it forgets to tell him its dyed SUDT2 & not ATF.

I havent gotten around to getting a new bottle or painting the dipstick yet on at L4060. It's hard to read the dipstick, but doable. Unlike the sight glass on the L3200. Unless it was in the middle of the tiny glass you had no clue if it was under or over.

Here you go. It takes about 30 seconds, costs nothing, and has no effect on the oil.
I'm surprised that the trick isn't more popular, but I've never seen anyone else do it.

Me too. My transmission funds are almost so dang clear I wonder if white would even be enough contrast.

Being 70, I'm familiar......

I actually considered drilling 2 small holes in the dipstick, one at the bottom and one at the full mark (like some cars have) so when it's full, the fluid bridges the hole and you can see it. Not an issue anymore with the Chevron THC.

Clever!

Pull the dipstick and lay it on a clean paper towel or cloth rag without sliding it up or down. The oil level will show on the towel/rag at whatever level it shows on the stick. You already had the towel or rag in your hand.
