Self-driving vehicleç—´ scare the crap out of me. We regularly have to shut down major Interstates with a patrol car and a flashlight (eventually adding cones and/or flares). This is something a driver can see and understand, but what will a self-driving truck do? How do they respond to hand signal given by a man in the roadway?
The self driving vehicles do have cameras and other sensors to monitor the road, other vehicles and hazards. The systems are designed to response similar to human drivers when issues arise.
The self driving cars and trucks have logged millions of miles on the road already. They are still in a learning process refining the systems typically with a backup driver / engineer onboard. A big challenge isis people. The systems are designed to obey the traffic laws and regulations. But people don't.
