Self-driving vehicleç—´ scare the crap out of me. We regularly have to shut down major Interstates with a patrol car and a flashlight (eventually adding cones and/or flares). This is something a driver can see and understand, but what will a self-driving truck do? How do they respond to hand signal given by a man in the roadway?

The self driving vehicles do have cameras and other sensors to monitor the road, other vehicles and hazards. The systems are designed to response similar to human drivers when issues arise.

The self driving cars and trucks have logged millions of miles on the road already. They are still in a learning process refining the systems typically with a backup driver / engineer onboard. A big challenge isis people. The systems are designed to obey the traffic laws and regulations. But people don't.

Teslas in autopilot have killed people already. But if you look at the deaths per mile autopilot vs normal people, Tesla autopilot is killing fewer people than we are. Not sure what the numbers are with any other similar systems or CDL vs normal drivers. But I expect it will only continue to tilt away from humans towards the machines.

Machines won't cover all scenarios, especially at the start. They will need people for exception handling & will kill people. As somebody else noted figuring out a legal & insurance framework for property damage or injury/death will be key. But while machines killing us is tragic if they are less effective at that on the whole than we are at killing each other on average, it's a good thing.

I'm just waiting for the day when I come out of the woods two miles from the truck, and it comes down to pick me up. I've been looking for one of those ever since that TV show with the Camaro. ;)

It may come, but be a little beat up. Flat tire, bent rim, pushed in grill, mirror missing, minor stuff like that.

Or it can just drive you home after a hard night partying.

Sorry. Perhaps I should have posted my comment in Rural Living under the "You know that you are getting old when:" thread. ;)

Back in the day, we used to negotiate four hundred series highways, to get home after a party. Often it worked best using just one eye. If you didn't cause a wreck or kill anyone (including yourself) all was good. If caught, the cops would often just tell you to sleep it off, or call someone to come and get you.

I remember those days. We knew the places where we could buy without IDs. I used to let my 16 YO brother buy just because he could... even though I was a legal 18. My first year at college, the campus PD had a car dedicated to pulling drunks over and giving the occupants a ride to their dorm. Before dinner we always would gather at the bar to watch MASH... it was 3 doors down the hall from my dorm room. We used to have keg parties every Thursday night... and many other nights celebrating because it was a day ending with a “y”.
The first Saturday of my second year, a carload of dorm mates coming home from a party early in the morning crossed the centerline killing both drivers. Things changed a lot that year.

That is putting an awful lot of trust in 2 little pivot pins on the extender to hold back around 700 or 800 lbs.

Also asking a lot of the tailgate cables....
