Putting the R1 vs R4 debate to rest?

Next time, for my particular uses, I'll go back to R1. Mostly my work is where scuffing up the turf doesn't matter. R4 may be more thorn resistant but I did managed to put an antler prong thru mine. In the pic attached, I got the R4 off the edge of the pavement and attempts to get back up just made it worse. My thought at the time was that R1 would have probably let me drive out and, maybe, not sucked down so far to begin with.

I had 2 pieces in a spot like that a while back. We were dozing a road and had about 3 feet of fill over a low spot. The dump truck driver got too close to the edge and it collapsed. It didn’t like much of rolling the truck. I used the backhoe to push the truck out then decided I’d fix the spot where he went off and did the same thing. Using the boom at 90 degrees off to the side I got the back end lifted up and pushed back on the road.

Again as stated above, the situation determines the tire. Out here in the desert, every plant has a thorn of some type and the sand is deep and soft. The strength and flotation the R4’s provide dictate my tire. Turfs are too puncture prone and skinny R1’s just dig trenches.

I just got back from some road driving with R1痴 on my M7060, was delivering firewood with dump trailer. It snowed overnight so roads were lightly snow packed. Having no real experience driving a farm tractor in the winter on a road, I now know that when the R1痴 need replacing I値l be looking at a snow tire like a Nokian. A lot of guys run Nokian痴 year round on loaders around here. I don稚 need the R1痴 for traction for anything else I do (loader work, some mowing and light landscaping) but that痴 what came on the machine (used purchase). I wonder if the snow tire will last any different than the R1痴. Time and money will tell I guess!!

I didn't read any replies but I know that there is an R1(..) or R4(..) newly on the market, and Ive seen them on new JD tractors, that is a compromise between the two types to eliminate as much of the difference as could be devised.

I have had cuts with r1 r3 r4 tires and I can honestly say that I hate r4 tires. They are completely useless most of the time. No reason at this point in time that better tires haven't been developed for this market. I have seen some impressive off road truck tires that I feel would be ideal for my tractor. Often thought about machining some adapters or modify wheels to try some. My honest opinion about the r4 tire trend on cuts was based off of looks rather than function. I wish a company would offer a better more universal tire. I understand that some people like the r4 tires for their uses, but I do not. I think a real hybrid tire would easily eliminate the r4 market. Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I am in no way trying to bash any r4 fans.

Someone who agrees with me.

It's time for tire design changes on these tractors.

I've taken a few nasty rides on R4s myself, they're like running completely bald Summer tires on a rear wheel drive car in a snowstorm.
