Outside air intake

Maybe if he'd left the trash in the truck and called the FD it would have contained it in the truck until they got there, VS dumping it on the side of the road on a windy day.

Why didn’t the FD put out the fire when it was small? It didn’t go from a smoldering pile of trash to burning 70 houses instantly.

They probably had safety meetings and were waiting for a HAZMAT specialist, before touching the fire of an unknown composition.

Yeah, it pretty much did. I guess the winds were really high that day, the guy dumped the load, the wind blew burning debris into the brush and it was gone just like that.

You would think that compacted garbage wouldn't cause any immediate fire threat and could easily be driven to some safe spot and dumped. A fire can't burn without oxygen. How would you do supression when there is no vacant space? That makes no sense to me at all.

I have heard it would be a foam system...

There is a hood and ducting directly above the stove vented to living room capturing convected heat from the stove top. Perhaps I should "motorize" this area with a fan of some sort...but then there is that pesky wood stove drafting to be concerned about with a duct fan that an oai might cure. My word this is fun....(not really)

What you have there is a direct path for a fire to spread to your living area. Don’t let your insurance company know about this. It seems that you don’t have wood stove regulations in your part of the world or you would not have been allowed to install it this way. Family safety comes first.

BX23D,
I am not sure that is what he is saying.

Arrow,
Do you have a picture?

If the woodstove were to start a fire, the hood and ducting would funnel the fire from the basement to the living space.

If it’s metal pipe that doesn’t seem very likely.

I thought about the same thing when I installed ductwork from over the stove to our living room on the other side of the house. The stove sits directly beneath two bedrooms as it is. There's smoke detectors in the stove room, all bedrooms, the living room, hallway, etc... as well as CO detectors. If there were a fire, I'm counting on the smoke detectors to wake us up and get us out of there. If the ducting and fan were to suck a fire into the pipe and funnel it towards the living room, the fan would burn out first, as it's only rated for 200 degrees. The inlet sits lower than the smoke detectors in the basement, so I think they'd go off first before any smoke or fire could get into the pipe. Also, it's unlikely the stove will burst into flames, as it's all steel. The area around it is all concrete, etc.... I'm more scared of our gas clothes dryer than the wood stove.

If your wood stove starts a fire outside of itself, you got a bigger install problem than duct work.
