With more EV's on the road, how will the federal excise tax be assigned to them?
That's a real issue, and not resolved. How can the Feds and states widen freeways to move more cars if nobody pays gas tax?

(Roadway design: Quantity of traffic dictates the width, damage from trucks dictates thickness of the pavement.)

Actually, in 2012. Likely worse, recently.

With more EV's on the road, how will the federal excise tax be assigned to them? In Wyoming its 24 cents a gallon for gasoline and diesel.

Often I like a KISS approach, but this is one place where I'd like to see modern tech applied - in 2019 the tech to road-tax directly to an EV is relatively trivial, but I won't be surprised if a much simpler broad-brush "Eco-transport-initiative" tax will be added to every utility bill.

Sounds logical, to people with EV's.

The problem is, are they going to put a tax on every electric bill to pay for the small percentage of people who are running electric vehicles?
I would object strenuously to that being as I'm already paying road tax through the fuel that I purchase and I don't see a reason for me to be taxed twice...

We dont have a Boston harbor to throw EV's off the dock here if a broad base tax were to be implemented.

There are some youtube videos of guys that Rebuild Wrecked Tesla cars. There is some really interesting technology in those cars. More than just a battery, controller and electric motor.

It was some of those kinds of videos that my 21 year old son has shared with me over this year that made this old man wake up to how far automotive technology has advanced. While not everyone one sees Mercedes Benz as a maker of quality cars it was this recent article that woke me up and resulted in the purchase of the used Nissan Leaf a couple months ago. The need of a company in Norway to cut $23 million in operating cost will get the attention of most in business today.

"This should serve as a warning to companies like Toyota that take a wait and see attitude toward EVs. As Tony Seba describes more clearly than anyone else I know, although a disruption starts slowly, when things hit a tipping point, demand shifts quickly and those unprepared for the change must suffer the effects of the disruption."

When there are people slamming a genius like Elon Musk that is a huge Wake-Up call to set up and pay attention because change is in the wind.

Couple paid $1 for car, Elon Musk bought it from them for 6 figures

Alabama levies a $200/year tax on EVs in lieu of gas tax. Other states do similar, but no other I know of is so high. Is equivalent to 21,000 miles at 30 MPG.

Seriously, you lack imagination. Would be easy to pay for roads with a steady tax income if only vehicle tags were used to pay for roads not schools.

Yep, there's no chance there will be advances in technology

Let's say you're going to a party, so you pull out some pocket change and buy a little greeting card that plays Happy Birthday when it's opened. After the party, someone casually tosses the card in the trash, throwing away more computing power than existed in the entire world before 1950!

You are comparing apples and oranges . By that line of thinking why isn稚 the mile being ran under two minutes by Olympic athletes . I never said anything about computer power. Lead acid battery capacity is topped out . NiCad battery capacity is topped out . Lithium battery capacity is topped out , get over it .
The laws of physics are not changed by good intentions , well wishes and high ideals . There is a limit to how much energy that can be stored per pound of lithium, just as there is a btu limit to a gallon of gasoline .
Unless you have discovered some new element on the periodic table, there is no new material to make a battery from that operates at room temperature and at atmospheric pressure .
Ask a chemist or electrical engineer that works in the real world . Instead of employees of a firm that makes promises to keep bringing in the Goverment and university research grants .
