Looking to purchase and install a Generac standby generator for my home.

I was curious who here has had good experience with ordering from XYZ and having the unit shipped direct? Price, service, etc.

I bought from northern tool, 22k unit with battery and oil warmer and $200 rebate card. Came with 10 yr warranty but w/o transfer switch as my 400 amp transfer switch was installed when I built. Free shipping. Had local generac dude install it around $2k He is 6 miles away.

HOLY CRAP! $2000 to install on a house that already had the transfer switch? Did you have it installed in the next county and trench 2/0 cables?

2/0 is not big enough......should be 4/0 ?

Well, 6 miles of cable from his house must be expensive :D

I remember pricing out a diesel generator from a local company, and it was going to cost $10K with another $4-5K for installation. I bought one myself for about $7500, and did my own install for about another $1200 in materials, another couple hundred for equipment rental, and many hours of labor. After going through that experience, I could easily appreciate the $4-5K install cost, especially for a professional company that would already have their own equipment, use licensed workers, and have stricter procedures to follow with codes, inspections, etc. The combination of electrical and mechanical work, plus site prep, trenching etc, make these installs pretty comprehensive. It would have been a little simpler if I put it next to the house, but my generator is about 20-25' away in a small outbuilding.

I thought 2 WAS bigger than 4.

2 is bigger than 4 in standard wire but when you go to the larger cables followed by the /0 then the numbers reverse and the bigger the number the bigger the cable.
