I need to haul a 2200 lb tractor - Ford 1520 from Akron OH to Fenton MI. Any recommendations on a reputable company I can hire to do this?
Thanks!

228 miles, and 2,200 lbs.?
That should easily work with a U-Haul trailer

A reputable company will have a DOT #, MC # (Authority), DOT inspected vehicles, and depending on the truck and/or trailer used, a Medical Card. They will also have to have a $750,000 liability insurance policy, among other requirements, determined by equipment.

On UShip, you’ll find a lot of fly-by-nighters. Same with Facebook and Craigslist. They will generally tell you they are “licensed and insured”. Ask what that means. They usually won’t know. When you get their DOT #, look it up, you will be able to see their driving/inspection history and if they actually have the Authority.

If they tell you they don’t need any of this, they are lying or ignorant, either way, not who I want hauling my stuff. If their weight rating is over 10,000 pounds, they have to have all this (not a CDL or Medical Card, if at 26,000 pounds or less).

Thanks so much, very good information!

I think hot shot stuff is generally $1.50-2.00 per loaded mile these days. That's probably for a bit longer range stuff, I'd guess a bit more overhead for shorter trips. The previous stuff about DOT numbers & insurance is good. A 1 ton pickup truck may or may not require a CDL, depending on the GVWR of the trailer.

Yes, should have mentioned: Anyone charging less than $1.00 per mile is not making money or cutting corners somewhere (a few are just really bad at math). The $1.50-$2.00 per loaded mile would be a reasonable starting point.

I do, I'm over 20K GCVW, so DOT numbers required. It's not the GVWR of the trailer, it's the total GCVW that determines if you need DOT numbers. 20 is the magic number here in Michigan.

Ya, 26k GCWR at the federal level for a CDK although states may be less. I was just saying that with a 1 ton truck it it could go either way depending on the GVWR of the trailer.

I certainly don't mind having them on the door. Local Barney Fife's around here bust lawn care outfits pulling trailers constantly for not having DOT numbers displayed. I heard it was a 150 buck fine too.

Both doors, right under the farm name / logo

I tried the U-Ship thing to bring my chipper back from MN to Ont Can. All too expensive and would have paid even more for a customs broker, so did it myself.

I wouldn't say that below a certain cost is a red flag. Sure, no one could do that business "regularly" below a certain amount. But occassionally yes. And it allows them to (possibly) right off equipment. Maybe, they are even doing it just for something to do.

To me, (U-Ship) felt like putting a wanted AD out for something and everyone who responds is SKY HIGH.

Must be a regional thing. I monitor almost everything coming and going within 500 miles of me. Almost never do bids even go for a dollar a mile and that’s before all of Uship’s fees (20% to the shipper, off the bid price). Running a load for less than 80 cents per mile is not possible, unless you’re not running legally or have a huge income from other sources. But math is hard and most people can’t do it.
