Thanks for mentioning that, Zork. You got me concerned and I did an internet search "hose material for automotive air conditioners". I found this interesting and pertinent article: https://codan.com/assets/codan-rubber---modern-cars-need-modern-hoses-web.pdf
To summarize it: Until around the year 2000 standard rubber hoses were used in auto ac systems. When the government mandated R134 refrigerant to replace R12, they also made a requirement for the rubber hoses to become less permeable. The higher permeability of rubber hoses caused vehicles to lose their charge quicker, which was an environmental concern. So industry came up with plastic lined rubber hoses for automotive ac systems. Along the way they also improved the temperature resistance and noise (?) characteristics of the hoses. There was no mention a standard rubber hose of deterioration and clogging due to chemical reactions. I suppose it is still possible though.
Based on what I found; it is clear that an air hose is not what I should be using, but at this point I think I will still charge it, knowing it may loose it's charge quicker is seemingly the biggest risk. I does tick me off that I can't repair it correctly.
