This week I decided to fix my air conditioner that didn't work this past summer. A couple of months ago a friend, who has the equipment, charged it with refrigerant. We checked and checked and finally found a very small leak on a crimped fitting on the line from the compressor to the condenser. The line has two 10mm O.D. aluminum tubing ends connected by a crimped-on rubber hose. I ordered a new line from Branson, and when it came in it was wrong. The part number listed in the parts book for the 4720ch is the wrong part for my 4720ch. It seems Branson changed condensor suppliers somewhere along the line. The listed condensor has an inlet port in a different location than mine. My dealer has put in several hours in trying to help me, but so far Branson's parts dept. hasn't been able to track down the proper part.
I called a hydraulic hose shop, and they said they could probably repair it. So yesterday I finally got around to taking the line off to try and get it fixed. After driving several hundred miles, and visiting several stores (5 in total) who specialize in that sort of work, I was unable to find anyone who would repair or replace the line because 1) they didn't have the right sized repair materials to fit this line 2) they couldn't silver solder and adapter to the existing ends on my line because they are made of aluminum, 3) one shop said they could send it off and TIG weld new hose fittings on to the old ends, but it would cost about $200 for the repair and take a week to do. 4) No one had the proper end fittings to fabricate a totally new line. Finally in frustration, at the end of a long seeming unproductive day, I went back to the "House of Hose" in Spokane (they were the most friendly shop I had been to) and told them what I have been through. The manager listen to my story and apparently felt sorry for me. He made a repair using my old ends and crimping on a new 13/32" I.D. air hose (as close to the original 10mm hose as he could find). He said he wouldn't guarantee the results, but was fairly confident it would hold pressure. So I am putting back together tomorrow, pull a vacuum on it, and will heat up my shop nice and warm so it will get a good charge, and hope it works next summer.
