Anybody ever wash Labrador Retriever

Quincy (my lab chow mix) and I take a shower together all the time. He loves the shower. Squeegee him off and towel dry and he lays down in front of the woodstove and sleeps for a few hours. Great pup.

I'm keeping my son's dog while he and my wife take his kids to Disney World. The dog looks to be about half Chocolate Lab, maybe 60 pounds. I found that labs have an undercoat and I wasn't sure the water penetrate the undercoat. Is there a trick to washing a Lab.?

Call up a local groomer and see what they charge. It might be worth it to you.:)

We have Akita's that shed like crazy and two of them are show dogs, so baths are very common at my place. Most of the time my wife bathes them in the bathtub with one of these shower attachments from Water Pik. Waterpik PES-142 Pet Wand Dog Shower for Indoor-Outdoor Use, 1.5", Blue/Grey - - Amazon.com

She also has grooming table for drying them and doing their nails. Dogs really need to start having their nails done as puppies, but even adult dogs will get used to it if you just do a little at a time and not stress them out too much.

When she gets busy with work, or the weather is really cold/muddy, she will take them to a groomer. Their rates are based on the size of the dog, and for our Large dogs, it's $45 each. They do a very good job and it usually takes about an hour and a half for each dog. We only drop off one at a time. Prices vary with different groomers and we go to this one because they show poodles and understand the show world.

For what it costs, it's hard to justify the time it takes to do it yourself.

We used to wash our German Shepherd ourselves. In summer time it isn't bad, but he doesn't like going in the shower in the winter. What with us getting soaked as much as the dog and it taking hours to complete, I find it much better to take him to a groomer.

The local groomer charges $60 to wash, dry, comb and brush AND use the Furmanator on him. He is a long hair shepherd and has a thick undercoat that takes a long time to dry. The furmanator gets rid of a lot of the shedding undercoat so we have less hair to deal with. My bad back doesn't like bending over for the long time it take so do the job, so it is worth the price for me.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Of all the answers, I liked the ones where the wife did it best. If I was fifty years younger, I night ask if your wives had sisters. :)

Eddie, you forgot to mention the custom pool you built for them!

The joys of a Chinese Crested, shake to their hearts content and nothing happens but howls like a hyena in the bath, he hates it.

Best of luck with the wash to come. Having had two Labradors to wash at the same time, I know what you are up against. Maybe yours will be like our female - she loved bath time, the male not so much. But both liked drying time and the towel game.

When I put up the original post, my scattered brain typed "... I'm not sure the water penetrate the undercoat " and the mistake got by me when I proofed the message. I meant "penetrateD" instead of "penetrate". The bath was over before I typed and the question was for future reference.
All of the information you guys gave me could come in handy very soon. Lucy still smells and could get another bath at any moment. She's really a very sweet dog. The last dog that stayed with me was my nephew's American Bulldog. The ground shook when he barked and he didn't like me. I would never have tried to wash that one.
