We have Akita's that shed like crazy and two of them are show dogs, so baths are very common at my place. Most of the time my wife bathes them in the bathtub with one of these shower attachments from Water Pik.

She also has grooming table for drying them and doing their nails. Dogs really need to start having their nails done as puppies, but even adult dogs will get used to it if you just do a little at a time and not stress them out too much.
When she gets busy with work, or the weather is really cold/muddy, she will take them to a groomer. Their rates are based on the size of the dog, and for our Large dogs, it's $45 each. They do a very good job and it usually takes about an hour and a half for each dog. We only drop off one at a time. Prices vary with different groomers and we go to this one because they show poodles and understand the show world.
For what it costs, it's hard to justify the time it takes to do it yourself.
