What kind of potatoes do you grow?

Thirty eight years ago, when we first moved here, we had a large garden. We grew Russets. Two years later the pocket gophers found the garden. It all went down hill from that point. I can buy Russets/Yukon Gold/etc so cheap - not worth the effort to fight Mother Nature.

Like I said earlier, they almost give them away here,

Haven't grown any for several years, but here in this part of Oklahoma I always had the best luck with red potatoes. I always rolled them in powdered sulfur when the cuts were still wet; seemed to make the soil a bit more acid and keeps bugs away.

Same here in central Texas with lots of limestone and alkaline well water. Red potatoes dusted with powdered sulfur. Planted half 6 weeks ago the other half yesterday. The first half are 18" high and already have small potatoes.

I really like them, but at my age, and just the two of us, a trip to the farmer's market keeps us happy. I do raise my own tomatoes, peppers and onions, because there's nothing like home grown...and in the late summer when the onions are gone, I plant some East Texas Purple Hull peas YUMMY! I may have to camp out with my shotgun to keep the deer off of them though!

My potatoes are organic and I compare the price to organic potatoes in the store which are about a dollar a pound.

They charge over a dollar a pound around here for conventionally grown potatoes.

Yikes! I can get 50 lbs in season at any farm stand for $10.00. I just refuse to buy them when they are so easy to grow,

That’s all we got for potatoes when we grew them 50 years ago (10-20 cents per pound). The middleman makes all the money.

Growing them is the easy part, planting and digging not so much, it sucks!

I wouldn't even dig potatoes, if I can buy them for 10 bucks per 50 pounds!

I haven't found digging them to be that difficult, once I got my middle buster/ potato plow. I also know what hasn't been sprayed on them.
