Sorry to hear it. Try a new fuel filter, after double checking the prefilter again.

When you redo the fuel lines, you probably can get rid of that after market fuel pump.

FWIW: I run SeaFoam in all of my diesel, primarily to keep algae growth down, but also for keeping fuel lines and injectors clean. After you have changed the fuel filter and convinced that you have solved your problem, you might want to consider adding a can just to clean things out.

All the best,

Peter
Well it was about 4 minutes that it ran perfect. Then same thing. Motor slows way down, then dies out. Let it sit for a minute, starts right up and then repeats.
Going to have to go through the entire fuel system.
Don't have enough time to work on it right now as I'm to busy with my regular job.

Wish there was a P.T. mobile guy to call for repairs.

And maybe I missed it in the thread... Dump that fuel along with the filters this still sounds like water/air to me.

So, I'm curious. What do you use old/bad diesel for? For me, it is hazardous waste, and I can only get rid of limited amounts biannually.

All the best,

Peter

I use it to heat up fires. My burn pile is generally 20x50 by 6ft high I mix some diesel with motor oil in a Hudson sprayer. Because the pike is so large i wait until the winter rains to burn. Hard to start and that is where the mixture cones in.

Oh and for the op i am going to bet the prefilter is plugged again. You have rust in the tank and your use is shaking it free.

If it's only contaminated with water, I usually just drain it, settle the water, mix in diesel kleen and back in the tank.

If Too far gone, yep hazmat. Which in NC I can unload a few gallons at the time at most mech shops I use.

I would suspect that small filter the previous owner put on, I think it is a gas filter anyway.

You could mix the old diesel with drain oil if the town lets you get rid of that. Or use it in a parts washer.

Pumped out the fuel because I couldn't see the bottom of the tank with a flash light to see if there was gunk in it or a clogged strainer. Pumped some of the fuel into a clear jug to check it out.

Pretty clean inside tank and no strainer in my tank bottom at fuel exit port. A little rusty and some dots of little brown funk here and there on the walls. Could be rust or fuel bugs? Not extensive and tank was actually way better than I expected it would be.

Changed fuel filter at engine, checked prefilter again (clean) , 5 gallons of new gas with additives and injector cleaner in tank and fuel filter.
Cut last few inches of fuel line off that looked like air might be getting sucked in due to age cracking in fuel line at engine fuel transfer pump.

Let old fuel sit for a couple days in clear jug and no water in bottom of clear jug, perhaps a little cloudy when pumped out and what might be a very thin layer of something a slightly different color on top?

Started machine and it starts immediately. Oil pressure between 60 and 70psi. Engine sounds perfect.

The start/stop manual shutoff lever stays about in the middle position. I wired shutoff lever in the run position to try to bypass the shut off solenoid? Don't know if that actually does anything without actually taking out the solenoid lever inside engine.

Ran it for 5 minutes and no issues.
Couldn't run it for any longer as I had something else to take care of.

Hopefully, it's fixed. Cant really identify specifically what was wrong with it?
Fuel doesn't look bad to me and there was no settled water in the clear jug after a couple days? Can the fuel still be bad without any obvious signs/water in it?

Wont be back to where the machine is till this weekend so I will be able to run it longer then.
If I don't add to this post, it's all good.

I'm glad that it is running ok. If you have intermittent issues again, you might want to blow air back from the prefilter to see if there is something in the fuel line that shifts and blocks the fuel line.

The fuel looks ok from 2500 miles away. :)

Little orange clumps could be rust, could be biofilm, could be a little of both. Putting a biocide (DieselKleen, or whatever your favorite is) will help kill the beasties off and move them on down to your fuel prefilter/filter. Diesel additive will help dry things out, but there is nothing like fresh quality fuel, and keeping your diesel tanks full. So it sounds like you are doing everything that I would be doing.

FWIW: My manual shutoff springs back to a hard stop under spring pressure. There is no wiggle.

All the best,

Peter

Your symptoms mirror what happened once to me with my backhoe. Almost word for word.

I finally figured it out. My water separator ..... was chock full of water, right to the brim. So it would let a thimble of fuel past.....I'd start....but the moment I really hit the throttle, it would die. Seemed I could idle "down the road" but discovered I could only "idle down the road" for about 50 feet, then it died.

I was preparing to drain things and rip it apart.... figured let's start at the easy stuff and WHOA.... darn thing was full of water. Drained it, slapped new filter on it and took that as my lesson to look at it more often.
