I have 4 different tractors with 4 types of trannys , Straight gear, synchro gear . shuttle shift and hydro, the hydro wins hands down for ease of use and speed for mowing and loader work .I was brushhogging with my hydro last weekend in very tall thick brush . I was in mid range and decided to go up a very steep hill and see how it did , The tractor never bogged or slowed down at all, i also cut around hundreds of cedar and locust trees and the back and forth is much easier than constantly turning back and forth having to clutch and shift.

I drive my M59 with the seat tires backwards for the backhoe. The M59 has an actual level to do it. I used the cruise control lever on my last tractor to do it. Try that with a geared tractor.

For the newby's passing by and reading this stuff. What matters with a tractor and how much it will pull is a function of weight and traction. The heavier the tractor the more it will pull, the better the tires "hook up" to the surface, what ever that surface is the more it will pull. As long as the drive train will spin the tires on that surface, that is ALL the drivetrain will do. if some MORON puts his hydro equipped tractor in HI range for a test, all that proves is that the tester is a MORON. The reason the hydro tractor did not spin the tires in HI range is because the hydro protected itself from the high pressure built up and the hydro relief valve opened. ONLY an total MORON would attempt ANY kind of pull with the hydro in HI range. And ONLY a very disingenuous person would perform a tractor pulling test on varying ground conditions. That is not at all fair. If you wanted to make a more unfair and disingenuous video, I could not know how you would go about. it. Messicks should be ashamed. Very ashamed.

Maybe Messicks has an over stock of gear tractors.

I will weigh in saying that I have only had a GST L and hydro shuttle geared M.
The only HST tractors I have ever driven are my Kubby T lawn tractors:p.
But just from mowing my lawn on those little hydros , I know I would prefer HST to the clutching and gear changing that is my current MO since I primarily do some sort of loader work and other than the infrequent log hauling and snow plowing, oh yes, loader again, that's it.
The shuttle is fine but all that back and forth and maneuvering with a load up front, I would choose an HST next time.
Of course, I bought a used tractor at a good price that I love, that does everything I ask of it and more.
Good thing because barring a disaster, I will likely have this tractor a long time.:)

Lately I been doing lots of loader work and yes gear is a pain, its constantly shifting going back and forth and making sure the tractor dont roll while going in a gear.

I cant quite put my finger on it but something tells me you didn't like the video or maybe it was the numbers, but to be fair only a moron would pull in high range with gear tractor.

Yes, that makes him a double moron. A clutch jerking double scoop of moron. Why didn't he put the hydro in LO range and the gear tractor in low range 1st gear, and NO jerking, just slowly let out the clutch until wheel spin just barely started and take a reading. Do the same for the hydro, and just feather the pedal until wheel spin just barely started and take a reading. Even then it would not be completely fair because the ground is not the same under the tires. I guess they wanted to make a really stupid video, and they succeeded.

Along with the commentators on the Youtube, I think most of you missed the point.

He was only showing the HST puts indeed less power to the ground. The fact that the Geared tractor can spin the wheels in High Range and the HST can't, says it all. It just sits there and whines. What's the point for putting both tractors on Low range? Just so see wheels spinning? And yes, Neil said in the comments that he'll do the same test on a hard surface and similar tractors.

For the those that say that you don't do any tractor work in High Range, quite often fields are plowed in 1st gear High Range, where a HST would fall on its face with a lot of noise behind. Another one is the picture I'll add, would an HST tractor pull this trailer on a hilly road without having to fully stop and messing with ranges? Definitely not. The Gear tractor just downshifts on the move a gear or two.
