Actually, studies show cloth face masks do significantly reduce aerosol expiration.

See
Low-cost measurement of facemask efficacy for filtering expelled droplets during speech | Science Advances. (scroll to figure 3).

A 60%+ reduction is significant.

If you want a wealth of information from the Nation's preeminent aerosol scientist, look up Linsey Marr from Virginia Tech on Twitter. She has a wealth of easily-digestible information.

Yeah, and the N95 is significantly better. Pretty much what I said isn't it?

Whomever put that chart together needs to go back and take a course on statistics. The chance of not dying is not 99.6%.

As a thought exercise, think of what numbers will look like in a month. They will go up. Which means, according to your numbers, the risk of dying goes up too. That's why things like case mortality are looked at.

If 100% of people are infected, then, according to those number 2.4% of the population will die.

But hey, that's only about 8 million people in the US.

So yeah, let's strive for herd immunity ... Who needs old people anyway? They just drain precious resources from the federal government.

well. looks like Sweden did the herd immunity thing, and it seems to be working well for them. Death rate is very low now and still dropping. check it out yourself. It looks like they are done with the plague.
Look, people are going to die, no one is denying that.

Almost reads like you've come full circle to advocating for no masks, no lock downs...
😉

Ha! I wish it could have been that way. Nope, just lamenting that we're all (all of us in this country, from the president on down) focusing on and arguing about tactics for preventing further spread without looking at any real root causes of our disastrous state of affairs. Maybe there's a better time for that later on though, because right NOW, people are dying and the virus is still spreading. It is real, and real people are suffering, and it's not that hard to help prevent more spread.

You have lost your credibility with me. Not that it matters I’m sure.

We’re into this pandemic 4 months and your spewing a new rhetoric. None of the massive deaths have occurred without masks. Sweden seems to be your stumbling block here and you refuse to follow their lead. Why are you so unwilling?

Shame on scientists who think in a silo. Yep, own it. The government hasn’t failed. Our silo thinking, out dated, red tape, process following scientists have.

Although I believe more what the real scientists say than what is said by a casual observer, I decided to try out your very unscientific test for myself to see how accurate or inaccurate you might be.

For this "scientific experiment", I went into my 70 degree bathroom, a room where the humidity is usually the highest, put my mouth exactly 3 inches from the mirror and huffed. The mirror fogged up in an area about 6 inches in diameter. Then I put on my kn95 mask and proceeded to do the exact same thing. Guess what? The mirror did not fog up at all, completely disproving your statement that masks do not help prevent aerosol disbursement.

Not the greatest scientific experiment in the world but one that proves you are wrong about your facts and makes it much easier for me to believe the real scientists instead of those who just make up their own facts.

FYI...I have always stated "inferior masks" when talking about what the majority of the general public is wearing...what percentage of the populous do you think are using N95 rated masks or better?

Try the same test with multiple layers of cotton or blended material...using 4 layers of a regular T-shirt it will still fog the mirror FYI...

FWIW...I could not find any protocols or approved standard testing methods for testing the effectiveness of face masks for moisture droplet disbursement...I wonder if the "real scientists" just made up their own too ??

And BTW...you do know what they say about teachers don't you ??....something like " It is easier to get a job teaching how to do something than to get a job actually doing that thing."...or "those that can't do, teach"...

I love numbers like these!

You know the average longevity for an American male is about 69 years.
The average age of mortality for this CCP flu is a bit over 80 years. I'm thinking I might try to catch this Wuhan pneumonia and increase my odds.

It's more like 78.5, not 69.

Maybe I misinterpreted what you were saying. If so, I apologize.

My comment was that, yes the N95 is great. However, 60+% filtration efficiency for homemade face coverings makes them highly worthwhile. That's more than "virtue signaling" or stopping just a little bit of spit.

I often quote this statement as well. That why I "DO" research on airborne transport of COVID-19. How about you, or others?

This has already been discussed in this thread.

See post 140 and 163.

Sweden's death rate (deaths per total cases) is the same as their Scandinavian neighbors because they have 10 times the deaths and 10 times the cases. Their per capita deaths (what matters) is 5-10 times their neighboring countries. They are still experiencing more cases/day than their neighboring countries. Economic analysis has shown their economy suffered every bit as their neighbors did because of a slower protracted shutdown, as opposed to a short severe one.

I most definitely would not hold Sweden up as an example of how to do things. Unless you think we need to have 10 times the number of people die than is necessary.
