When drilling through pipe or round stock, build a simple V holder for the pipe. Use se 2x’s. Before attacking cut one with a 45 degree down its length (table saw works great) then attach using screws or power nailer with the 45 cut exposed. Then attach the 45 cut to a wide piece of wood (1x, 2x, plywood etc) this you clamp your drill press table. Then clamp your pipe into the V and drill through both sides of pipe using a center punch to start the holes.
Perfectly aligned holes.

I have a metal V holder for pipe. Given one pipe is inside the other with wiggle room, there is an awful lot to line up. There were a couple of holes where I wasn't perfectly centered. I'm sure there are tricks for which I'm unaware.

Land Pride makes two extensions, I think 7" and 14". I ordered mine from a local dealer. It was expensive. It's solid 2" round bar with a 3/8" thick collar at the top. This was also before I bought my welder :)
The biggest problem I have is the flutes don't come up to the top of the hole to clear the dirt.

Has anyone tried to add flutes? Maybe a series of half circles welded on at a angle?

You are correct. I can't pull it out of the hole, and only a couple of the flutes are exposed. However, there is enough dirt above the flutes and in the first couple that it is still effective.

Along those lines, one note I would make is that you are leaving some amount of loose dirt in the hole. We learned that a heavy post would sink about 3-4" lower what I was reading with a tape measure when I was measuring the depth of the hole.

Learned on the Ford 850 that if we got the bit stuck in the ground from root or rock while drilling a hole we could turn the tractor off, jack a rear tire up and in reverse gear turn the tire to unscrew the auger. Saved a lot of digging. The tractor did not have live power pto.

Pipe is not consistent or strong compared to tubing. Good tubing can be found online or thru metal supermarket.
