Especially if it isn't you on the other end of the blower! I have a couple shop vacs and pretty much my top buying criterion is dB level.

See also my thread on trying to quiet my shop air compressor. I hate noise... and wind.

Na! Nothing worse than a pissy little 4 stroke gas engine running at 3600! Along with that horrible metalic pinging sound something inside them makes!

I think the key is to try to design a large diameter duct/fan that moves the volume but not at too high of velocity. Seems 6in is minimum and 8in would be a premium for a home shop for a dedicated fume extractor. Again, wanting volume extraction without sucking the shielding gas and at a low dB level. At least this is my thinking.

I'm sure you're right about the shielding gas. I'm not an expert in fluid mechanics, but I'm thinking if you just expand the duct size from 3" (or whatever the leaf blower nozzle is) to 8" right before the fume extraction point, the air will be moving at the same CFM but lower velocity. And that megaphone we just made will probably amplify the sound, too.

I think some testing is in order. I'll see if I can locate my jerry-rigged leaf blower sometime later this week if I have time.

where is this thread about quiet compressors? I am also passionate about this topic. Here is the compressor I built.

If you want to use it for reference, my fume extractor has approx a 6in duct and is rated at 780cfm.
I like that it doesn't blow all my warm air out in the winter, and hopefully my a/c next summer!

The duct is designed to be relatively close to the work peice, but won't effect the shielding gas. 1081777692.jpeg

Thanks TMGT... sound like I am pretty much on target. I'm thinking if I can port the noise to the exterior, I have something.

Dragoneggs, I'll hit your linked thread with more details, but real quick here...to dampen down noise in my shop, I used acoustic blankets, the kind used in sound studios.
