I think the key is to try to design a large diameter duct/fan that moves the volume but not at too high of velocity. Seems 6in is minimum and 8in would be a premium for a home shop for a dedicated fume extractor. Again, wanting volume extraction without sucking the shielding gas and at a low dB level. At least this is my thinking.

Thanks TMGT... sound like I am pretty much on target. I'm thinking if I can port the noise to the exterior, I have something.If you want to use it for reference, my fume extractor has approx a 6in duct and is rated at 780cfm.
I like that it doesn't blow all my warm air out in the winter, and hopefully my a/c next summer!
The duct is designed to be relatively close to the work peice, but won't effect the shielding gas.View attachment 669687
