Yeah, and at 6pm the sun is just a dull orange ball. What the heck....I can't imagine how bad it must be......

Imagine the dull red ball at noon and twilight at 6:00 PM. Daytime temps 15-20 degrees lower than forecast.
And we're a lot better here than in Portland!

The best thing to do regarding forest fires is,... nothing.

Yes, nothing. Humans have a nasty track record of trying to decide what痴 best for nature and when that happens, she strikes back with a vengeance. Keep in mind that what痴 渡atural to nature isn稚 always what we picture it as 渡atural? Forest fires has always been a part of the ecosystem and it is actually healthy. We humans just don稚 like the terms and decided to alter it.

Case in point, years ago, the Yellowstone Fires of 1988 was partly a result of over management of natural fires which didn稚 get rid of overgrowth and altered the food chains in which wildlife depended on young shoots which grows in cleared areas.

The Paradise Fire is a classic one that people could relate you closely. Years before developments in that area, the fires would have been permitted to burn through but due to human encroachment, the policy to suppress any close fires built up fuels over the years near developments and thus, creating a massive tinderbox which exploded tragically.

Sound practices in areas next to populations would be to thin out 斗adder fuels and to leave 妬slands of untouched vegetation to provide homes to wildlife. Of course, there痴 another topic regarding fire breaks and defensive perimeter around structures.

That IS man doing something to prevent these horrible fires. Its not nothing as you suggest.
What you fail to understand, then go on to admit in the bold paragraph later in your post, is that once man settles into an area, he needs to take responsibility to said area if he and his structures objective is to survive.

Last nights sunset here was weird, smoke is all the way to the east coast now and is visible haze.
Thinking of all of you and my relatives on the west coast, be safe.

+1. Forrest management by snowflakes always turns out bad as evidenced by what is happening right now. Deadfall and no timber management (cutting trees for paper and other commodities) has left many, many acres as tinder boxes. When tree huggers get the upper hand, the result is mayhem and death. Mother nature is just managing her timber tracts. Humans just happen to be in the way.

Additionally, posting to this forum via mobile device (tap-a-talk) causes posts to become basically unreadable. Why I lost it long ago. People need to use their mobile devices (cell phones) for making calls, texting and for distracted driving... and not surfing the Net. I usually refrain from reading them. Not into squiggly lines and broken words.

This morning it's really quite clear( down amongst the trees ) and just the barest trace of smoky smell. Overhead is all grey/orange color. And it's still pretty cool - 55F - for this time of year. More shifting winds at play. For now, what little wind is straight out of the NE.

Joe Walsh....

Got up this morning and it was still dark. a fair amount of stars out. Daylight looked fairly clear, some blue sky even.
Boy did it change fast. Its brighter outside and at times it looked like the sun was coming out.
Lots of smoke now but better than yesterday

Getting old and names get tough. least I got the 'Joe' right. BTW, have that album on CD.
